Frielendorf, Homberg (Efze) and Fritzlar (the Knüll and Schwalm)
Frielendorf has the most of our houses in the region, many of them in the holiday village beside the Silbersee, a small lake with a bathing area just outside the town. Homberg (Efze), around 15 minutes north, has a hilltop castle ruin and a market square of half-timbered houses. Fritzlar, a little further, has an old cathedral and a walled centre. Kassel is around 45 minutes away and Frankfurt airport around an hour and three quarters.
Best for: Families who want a swimming lake and small towns to explore
Not for you if: You want big mountains: the Knüll hills are low, rounded and wooded.
Bad Arolsen and Waldeck
Bad Arolsen grew up around a large baroque palace, and its long avenues and palace park make for easy walks. The Twistesee, just outside town, has a bathing beach and a cycle path round it. The Edersee and Waldeck castle are around 40 minutes south, and the Diemelsee is about the same distance west. Kassel is around 45 minutes by car, and Paderborn airport is a little over an hour away.
Best for: Couples and walkers who want a small spa town with a palace
Not for you if: You want nightlife: Bad Arolsen is a quiet residence town that goes to bed early.
The Edersee (Bringhausen, Bad Wildungen)
The Edersee is a long, winding reservoir held back by a dam at its eastern end, and it is Hesse's largest lake. Bringhausen sits on the quieter southern shore, right against the national park and its old beech woods, which are on the UNESCO list. Waldeck castle looks down on the lake from the north side, with a cable car up from the shore. Bad Wildungen, a spa town with a long park, is around 20 minutes south.
Best for: Swimming, sailing and beech forest walks in the Kellerwald-Edersee National Park
Not for you if: You are coming in a dry late summer for the water: the reservoir can drop a long way below full.
Kirchheim and Ronshausen (east, towards the Fulda valley)
Kirchheim is where the A4 and A7 motorways meet, and has a small lake with a swimming area. Bad Hersfeld, around 15 minutes away, holds a summer theatre festival in the ruins of its abbey church. Ronshausen is a village in a side valley a few minutes east of Bebra, close to the Fulda cycle path and the old town of Rotenburg an der Fulda. Frankfurt airport is around an hour and a half from Kirchheim.
Best for: Cyclists on the Fulda valley path and easy motorway access
Not for you if: You want total silence: Kirchheim sits close to a busy motorway junction.
Kassel and Bad Emstal
Kassel's Bergpark Wilhelmshöhe is on the UNESCO list, with the Hercules monument on top of the hill and water features that run down the cascades on set afternoons in summer. The Grimmwelt museum covers the brothers' fairy tales, which they collected in this region. Kassel-Wilhelmshöhe station has fast trains to Frankfurt and beyond. Bad Emstal is a small spa village around 20 minutes south-west, among the Habichtswald hills.
Best for: Culture, the Grimm brothers and a city base with good rail links
Not for you if: You want a house in the countryside: Kassel stock is mostly flats.
