Fritzlar suits couples and small families after a walled medieval town on the Eder, with old houses round the market square. The homes are spread around Fritzlar rather than grouped in the old centre, none has a pool, and there is no lake or sea on the doorstep.
Fritzlar is a market town of about 15,000 people in northern Hesse, built mainly on the north bank of the Eder. Its medieval centre is still ringed by a wall with watch towers, the tallest being the 38 m Grey Tower. Houses from the 15th to 17th centuries stand round the market square, and the town hall, first recorded in 1109, is still in use. The Romanesque and Gothic church of St Peter dominates the town. The homes are scattered around Fritzlar, sleep up to six, and most come with a garden; check each listing for details. Fritzlar is also a garrison town, with an airfield used by army helicopter units.
A hill across the Eder from Fritzlar where Boniface set up a bishopric in 742; foundation walls and a church to St Brigida remain.
The railway station where trains from Frankfurt stop on the rail journey from Frankfurt Airport towards Fritzlar.
Frankfurt Airport is the obvious gateway, and the drive from there takes around an hour and a quarter. By rail, trains from Frankfurt run to Wabern, but the full trip from the airport takes around three and a half hours. With the homes spread out, a car is the practical choice.
Yes. Fritzlar keeps a medieval wall with many watch towers, and its Grey Tower is the highest remaining town defence tower in Germany. The town hall, first documented in 1109, is the oldest in Germany still used for its original purpose.
Very old by German standards. Boniface founded a church and monastery here in 724, Charlemagne took the monastery under imperial protection in 782, and Henry I was elected King of the Germans at Fritzlar in 919.
You can, though it is slow. Trains run from Frankfurt to Wabern, and the whole journey from the airport takes around three and a half hours, against roughly an hour and a quarter by car.
For smaller families, mostly. Homes here sleep between two and six and most have a garden, but there are no pools, so check each listing for the layout you need.
