Homberg (Efze) is a small timber-frame town in northern Hesse, at the northern edge of the low Knüll hills. The Knüll is rural and quiet, with no nightlife, and Frankfurt airport is about 125 km away.
Homberg (Efze) is a town of about 15,000 and the seat of the Schwalm-Eder district, lying between the West Hesse Depression and the Knüll, a low mountain range, with the Efze river running through it. Timber-frame houses surround the market square, where the Engel-Apotheke of 1668 is the largest, and the Gothic St. Marien church is where a synod in 1526 turned Hesse Protestant. A castle ruin stands above the town, which takes its name from the castle. The homes are mostly small, typically for four, nearly all have a garden, and they are scattered over several kilometres around the town. Up in the Knüll, above 500 m, winter winds are harsh and snow can linger on the peaks.
The Knüll's highest peak at about 636 m, with a 24 m stone tower, a ski lift with two runs and a toboggan meadow.
The second-highest peak at 634 m, with a free-to-climb 12 m observation tower and groomed cross-country trails.
A garrison town in the high Knüll, known for the Knüllteich pond.
Frankfurt is the main airport, about 125 km away, and public transport from there takes over three hours by train and bus. Kassel is the nearest airport, around an hour and a half away by train, bus and taxi.
Winter in the Knüll is cold and windy above 500 m, and snow can linger on the peaks, enough in good years for the Eisenberg ski lift and cross-country loops. In hot spells the heights are more comfortable than the warmer lowlands, which suits walking days.
Yes, if quiet is the aim. It is a town of about 15,000, and the Knüll around it is rural with no nightlife. The half-timbered market square and the Gothic church give a few hours of wandering.
The 1526 synod at St. Marien church, where Hesse became Protestant under Landgrave Philip, which is why it is sometimes called the Reformation Church of Hesse. The timber-frame market square and the castle above the town are the other draws.
In a small way. The Eisenberg in the Knüll has a ski lift with two runs, blue and red, two cross-country loops of 7.5 km and 6 km, and a toboggan meadow. Snow depends on the winter.
A small town. About 15,000 people live there, it is the capital of the Schwalm-Eder district, and its old centre keeps a Gothic house from about 1425, a powder tower and a Hochzeitshaus that is now a local museum.
