Bringhausen suits families and walkers who want the Edersee's south shore with the Kellerwald-Edersee National Park on the doorstep. Homes are mid-sized, many sleeping six or more. It is a dead-end village of under two hundred people, so shopping and eating out mean driving.
Bringhausen is a tiny lakeside village in Edertal, on the south shore of the Edersee and right on the edge of the Kellerwald-Edersee National Park. The original village lay lower in the Eder valley and was given up when the dam was built between 1908 and 1914; residents moved up the slope, taking the church and several buildings with them. At low water the 1897 Bringhausen bridge and the ruins of Burg Bring on the Liebesinsel reappear. There is a boat landing stage, boat hire and a surf school. Our homes are grouped in and around the village. The road ends here, and evenings are silent.
Beech forest that has been part of a UNESCO World Heritage site since 2011, with a hikers' car park just above Bringhausen.
A trail of about 68 km that runs mostly through the national park all the way round the lake.
About 16 minutes' drive from Bringhausen, or 42 minutes on the 517 bus, with trains on to Kassel.
Bringhausen is a dead end, reached only from the east via the dam and Hemfurth-Edersee. Kassel is about 40 minutes away by car, or about 1 hour 25 minutes by train to Bad Wildungen and a taxi. A car is the practical choice.
The original village was abandoned when the Edersee dam was built, and its 1897 bridge was left under the reservoir. When the water runs low it surfaces again, along with the remains of Burg Bring on the Liebesinsel.
Yes. The village has boat rentals and a surf school, plus a landing stage for the Edersee passenger boats, so you can get onto the water without bringing your own kit.
Right on its edge. The lake and the villages along it, Bringhausen included, are outside the park, but a hikers' car park sits just above the houses and the 68 km Urwaldsteig runs round the lake.
Often. Most list a fireplace and a good number a sauna, and plenty sleep six or more, which suits families. Check each listing for exactly what is included.
