Castellammare del Golfo suits groups wanting a villa near a harbour town, the Zingaro reserve and the Faraglioni at Scopello. Most homes sleep around six and nearly all have air conditioning. Fewer than half have a pool, and the Zingaro coves are reached only on foot or by boat.
Castellammare del Golfo is a harbour town of about 15,000 people on the Tyrrhenian coast in the province of Trapani, about 35 km from Trapani itself. A castle built by the Arabs and enlarged by the Normans sits on a rocky outcrop by the sea, and the marina, Cala Marina, has many restaurants and bars, with boat trips to the Egadi Islands. East of town the gulf has about 30 km of white sandy beaches. West of it lie Scopello, with its tonnara, a traditional tuna fishing ground, and the Zingaro reserve, whose bay beaches are reached only on foot or by boat. The homes are spread over several kilometres, some by the town and some in the countryside, and many are family-sized. The town is a good place for off-season visits.
Village west of town with a tonnara and the Faraglioni, which shelter the coast from winds and sea currents.
Coastal path of about 7 km from Scopello to San Vito Lo Capo past coves such as Cala Tonnarella dell'Uzzo. No coast road, no cars.
Village at the far end of the Zingaro coastal path, the opposite end from Scopello.
Ancient site with a Doric temple and an amphitheatre where performances are still held. Castellammare was founded as its port.
Boat trips to the islands leave from Cala Marina, the town's harbour.
Palermo airport is about 27 miles away, around 34 minutes by car. A direct Autoservizi Russo bus runs from the airport to Piazza della Repubblica in Castellammare four times a day, taking around 35 minutes. Hire a car for the villas, the coves and Segesta. Trapani lies about 35 km west.
Sicily has hot, dry summers, when the sirocco from the Sahara can be felt, and mild, wet winters. Both the Zingaro and Scopello suit spring and summer. The town is also good for off-season visits, with cycling routes and the Sentiero Italia hiking trail.
