Gingst suits walkers, cyclists and bird watchers who want a quiet village in west Rügen, close to the Bodden where cranes gather. It is not a beach resort, so check each house's distance to the water before you book.
Gingst is a village of about thirteen hundred people in the West-Rügen municipal association, with St. Jacobi, the second-largest church on the island, a crafts museum in two eighteenth-century timber-framed houses, and a farm shop with a pottery. Rügenpark Gingst adds miniatures and a roller coaster. The homes are spread around the area over some ten kilometres, so some are in the village and others out in the countryside. None have a private pool, but most have a garden, over half a fireplace, and a good number a sauna. Houses mostly sleep about four with two bedrooms, and a few sleep far more. Evenings are quiet and there is little to do after dark. This side of Rügen does without big crowds, with reed-fringed Bodden shores rather than the promenades of Binz or Sellin.
Part of Rügen's quiet west, with a 1.9 km forest trail, a farm with pony rides and a shop, and views to Hiddensee.
Lagoon with much lower salinity than the Baltic, part of the Vorpommersche Boddenlandschaft National Park, with reed shores.
Harbour village with a long-established Gasthof and the island's third-oldest church, and the ferry port for Hiddensee.
Neighbouring island within the national park, reached by ferry from Schaprode.
Gateway to Rügen across the 2 km Strelasund, by the Rügendamm or the newer Rügen Bridge.
Hamburg is the practical airport: the drive to Bergen auf Rügen is just under three hours, and Gingst lies in the island's west. A direct train from Hamburg to Bergen takes over four hours. Rügen's own airport handles charter flights, and the villages here are scattered, so a car is needed for west Rügen.
Each spring and autumn tens of thousands of cranes come to the Bodden landscape, and the wooden platform at Tankow on Ummanz is one of the best places to watch them. Rügen's peak season runs from June to August, though the west stays calmer than the big resorts. Winter is very quiet, so check opening times before driving out.
No. Gingst is a village in west Rügen, not a beach resort. The homes are spread over some ten kilometres, so check each one's distance from the water.
Spring and autumn, when tens of thousands of cranes arrive in the Bodden landscape around west Rügen. The wooden viewing platform at Tankow on Ummanz is one of the most striking spots to see them.
It can be, for children who like animals and farms. Rügenpark Gingst has a roller coaster and miniatures, and Ummanz has pony rides and a forest trail. No home here has a pool, though.
Drive to Schaprode, the harbour village in west Rügen, and take the ferry. Hiddensee lies within the national park and can be seen across the water from Ummanz.
Pick Gingst for calm: it is rural, with Bodden shores, cranes and farm shops. Binz is one of the island's Baltic seaside resorts, a resort since the 1880s, so choose it for promenades and bustle.
