Glowe suits families and walkers who want the Schaabe, a white sand beach almost 12 km long on Rügen, with Jasmund's chalk cliffs next door. Most homes are two-bedroom places with a garden, and many have a sauna. It is a village of under 1,000 and over three hours by road from Hamburg or Berlin airports.
Glowe is a state-recognised resort of under 1,000 people on Rügen, where the Jasmund peninsula meets the Schaabe, with the Tromper Wiek bay of the Baltic on one side and the Großer Jasmunder Bodden lagoon on the other. A former fishing village, it grew into the Schaabe woods once seaside tourism took off in the early 20th century. The homes cluster in and around it. Most have a garden, about half a sauna and many a fireplace; they are two-bedroom places for around five, with some that sleep a dozen. The Schaabe beach is wide, white and fine-sanded in front of the dunes. The village has a promenade of about 2 km, a spa square and a harbour with around 400 berths. Evenings are quiet, and out of season quieter still.
A bar almost 12 km long to Juliusruh, with a wide white beach of fine sand and pine, birch and oak behind the dunes.
Germany's smallest national park, with the Königsstuhl chalk cliff rising 118 m and beech forest listed by UNESCO in 2011.
Two lighthouses with viewing platforms at the tip of Wittow; park at Putgarten, then walk 1.8 km or ride the road train.
One of the nearest towns to Jasmund National Park, with daily boats to Cape Arkona.
Hamburg Airport is about 3 hours 10 minutes by road and Berlin Brandenburg about 3 hours 20 minutes, so allow most of a day for arrival. Glowe is about 18 km north of Bergen auf Rügen. A car is needed for the cape, the cliffs and supplies.
Summer is the beach season on the Schaabe, which forms one huge natural bathing bay. Spring and autumn suit walking in the beech forests of Jasmund and out to Cape Arkona, where coastal collapses are frequent, especially in winter, so keep to the marked paths. Out of season the village is quiet, and the fireplace and sauna come into their own.
Almost twelve kilometres, running from Glowe to Juliusruh. It is a wide white beach of fine sand in front of the dunes, with a coastal forest of pine, birch and oak behind.
Close, as both are on the Jasmund side of Rügen. The Königsstuhl chalk cliff rises 118 m above the Baltic inside Jasmund National Park, Germany's smallest national park.
Hamburg, around 3 hours 10 minutes by road, or Berlin Brandenburg at about 3 hours 20 minutes. Either way it is a long drive, so plan the journey as a travel day.
For beach-led holidays, yes. The Schaabe is wide and sandy, and most homes here have a garden, but the village is small, so bigger shopping trips mean driving.
Easily. The cape is at the tip of Wittow, the peninsula the Schaabe joins to Jasmund; you park at Putgarten and walk 1.8 km, take a horse and carriage or ride the road train. Boats also run daily from Binz and Sassnitz.
