Groß Zicker is a small Mönchgut village on Rügen, below the grazed Zickersche Berge hills, with roomy garden homes for around six. There is no resort front here. Göhren, with its pier and museums, is the nearest place for a day out.
Groß Zicker belongs to the municipality of Mönchgut, on the peninsula in Rügen's south-east between the Greifswalder Bodden and the open Baltic. The village lies on the south side of the Zickersche Berge, dry hills of about 65 metres that sheep graze, inside the Südost-Rügen biosphere reserve. A signposted trail climbs from the village to the grassy summit of the Zickerberg. In the village you find a small harbour with a fishing boat, the village church and a reed-roofed hall house dating from 1720. Our homes sit in one tight group, and they are generally large, built for around six with some for eight, and a good number have a fireplace. The gently hilly ground between Groß Zicker and Klein Zicker suits short walks, and evenings are village-quiet.
End of the Rasender Roland steam railway, with a 270 m pier and museums in listed fishermen's and farmers' houses, plus the museum ship Luise.
Resorts on the same steam railway line, divided by the Mönchsgraben, a ditch dug to separate the monks' land from the rest of the island.
Seaside resort on the railway line, with a promenade of almost 4 km, a pier and a long sandy beach.
Town with a classicist centre and palace park, where the steam railway to Göhren starts.
Rügen is reached over the Rügendamm from Stralsund, and Hamburg and Berlin BER have rail links at least as far as Stralsund. Mönchgut lies at the far south-east end, where bus line 20 runs from Bergen to Sellin and Göhren, but a car is the practical way to reach a village on the peninsula.
In the main season Rügen's roads get very busy and free parking near beaches is scarce. Between seasons traffic is moderate, but restaurants often have extra closing days and many stop serving hot food around 19:00. Excursion boats from Binz and Sellin to Mönchgut run in summer, and the Rasender Roland runs hourly between Binz and Göhren in summer and every two hours otherwise.
Up to about 65 metres. They are dry hills, grazed by sheep, and a signposted trail leads from Groß Zicker to the grassy summit of the Zickerberg, which is about 66 metres.
Not in the village. The line runs from Putbus through Binz, Sellin and Baabe to Göhren, where it ends, so you drive or cycle to board. Trains run hourly in summer between Binz and Göhren, otherwise every two hours.
Groß Zicker is a small village among hills at the quiet end of Mönchgut. Baabe is a resort on the railway, with a harbour, a fishing museum and a beach cycle path running to Göhren.
Yes. Most are built for around six guests, a good number sleep eight, most have a garden, and a fireplace is common. None has a private pool.
