Breege-Juliusruh is a small resort municipality on Rügen's Wittow peninsula, next to the long Schaabe beach. Choose it for Baltic beach days and Kap Arkona; the catch is the journey, just over three hours by road from Berlin.
Breege-Juliusruh is a municipality of small villages (Breege, Juliusruh, Kammin, Lobkevitz and Schmantevitz) on Rügen's northern coast, only a couple of metres above sea level. Tourism is Juliusruh's mainstay, and Breege has a yacht harbour listed as one of the island's oldest. The Schaabe is the draw: a sandy beach of about 8 km on the narrow strip joining the Wittow and Jasmund peninsulas. It pulls in bathers all summer, though they spread out along its length so it only now and then feels crowded, and the shore break can be a nuisance. The homes are spread over a few kilometres of the villages around it. They sleep up to six, most have a garden, some have a sauna or fireplace, and none has a pool.
About 8 km of sandy Baltic beach on the strip linking Wittow to Jasmund, with paid parking less than 250 m from the sand.
On the same Wittow peninsula, Rügen's northernmost, with the remains of an old Rani temple fortress.
The Sportboot- und Yachthafen Breege, one of Rügen's oldest harbours; ship tickets are sold at the visitor centre.
Fly to Berlin and drive: Berlin to Breege is just over three hours by road. Trains via Stralsund take nearer five and three quarter hours, so most visitors will want a car for the villages and the beach with luggage and bikes in tow.
Summer is when the Schaabe is busiest, although bathers spread along its eight kilometres. Wave surfers use it in north-east to south-east winds, and there is an awkward shore break to get through. Outside summer the beach is still freely accessible at any time, but check opening times for harbour and visitor services before an off-season visit.
About 8 km, on the narrow strip between Wittow and Jasmund. It draws plenty of bathers in summer, but they spread out along it so it is rarely cramped, and paid parking is under 250 m away.
Wave surfing is the best fit at the Schaabe off Juliusruh. The spot works in north-east to south-east winds and has an awkward shore break to get through. A campsite and a small kite shop sit just north of the bay.
Just over three hours by road, about 200 miles. By train you change at Stralsund and the trip takes nearer five and three quarter hours, so most people drive.
Yes, because Kap Arkona is on the same Wittow peninsula, Rügen's northernmost, and has the remains of an old Rani temple fortress. Wittow joins Jasmund by the Schaabe, so the whole north is within reach.
Yes. Breege has a sports-boat and yacht harbour listed as one of Rügen's oldest, and the visitor information office in Breege-Juliusruh sells ship tickets.
