Baabe suits families and couples wanting a small Baltic seaside resort on Rügen, with saunas and gardens in many homes. The catch is distance: Hamburg airport is a little over three hours' drive away, and this is a village of under a thousand residents, not a lively town.
Baabe is a Baltic seaside resort on the island of Rügen, a municipality of fewer than a thousand residents in the Mönchgut-Granitz group of villages. At the northern exit from the village runs the Mönchgraben, what remains of a medieval boundary ditch. Other Baltic resorts on the island, Sellin, Göhren and Binz among them, are all reachable on the island's historic narrow-gauge railway, the Rasender Roland, which also serves Baabe. Our homes are spread over a few kilometres around the village, and most are houses or apartments for around four with a garden. About a quarter have a sauna or a fireplace, but hardly any have a pool or air conditioning, so the homes are set up for cool evenings rather than heat. Rügen gets most of its visitors between April and October, with the peak from June to August.

Resort on the Mönchgut peninsula near the eastern cape of Nordperd, and the end of the Rasender Roland line.
A seaside resort since the 1880s, on the narrow-gauge line, with direct Intercity trains from Hamburg.
Chalk cliffs including the Königsstuhl, on Rügen, made a UNESCO World Heritage Site in June 2011.
Hamburg airport is the practical choice, about three hours 10 minutes by car. Intercity trains run from Hamburg to Ostseebad Binz four times a day in around three and a half hours, and the Rasender Roland narrow-gauge railway continues from Binz towards Baabe. A car makes the island far easier.
Most visitors come to Rügen between April and October, and June to August is the peak. Summer is the beach season, though August averages only about 16 degrees on the island. Rainfall runs around 520 to 560 mm a year, with about 1,800 to 1,870 hours of sun. Homes with a sauna or fireplace make the cooler spring and autumn weeks more comfortable.
Yes. Baabe is one of the Baltic resorts reachable on the historic narrow-gauge railway, whose route runs from Lauterbach through Putbus, Binz and Sellin to Göhren.
Baabe is smaller and quieter, a village of fewer than a thousand people, while Sellin is another Baltic seaside resort on Rügen. Both are on the narrow-gauge railway, so you can stay in one and visit the other without a car.
About a quarter of ours do, and a similar share have a fireplace. Most have a garden. Very few have a pool, so Baabe suits cooler-weather stays more than hot-weather ones.

Summer. Most visitors come to Rügen between April and October, with the peak from June to August, so book school-holiday weeks early. Spring and autumn are cooler and calmer.
