Braunlage and the high Harz (Braunlage, St. Andreasberg, Benneckenstein, Hasselfelde)
Braunlage holds one of the two largest groups of our Harz houses and sits below the Wurmberg, the main ski hill in northern Germany, with a cable car from the edge of town. St. Andreasberg has its own small ski slopes and a silver mine you can visit. The Brocken is a long walk or a short drive and train ride away via Torfhaus or Schierke. Hannover airport is around an hour and a half by car.
Best for: Skiing, sledging and high-level walks to the Brocken
Not for you if: You want an old town: Braunlage is a functional ski town rather than a pretty one.
