Ballenstedt suits groups and history-minded walkers who want an Ascanian castle town on the Harz rim and the Selke valley trail. Several homes sleep eight or more. They are scattered across the eastern Harz rather than in the town, so a car is essential.
Ballenstedt is a town of about 8,400 people on the northern rim of the Harz, about 10 km south-east of Quedlinburg. Its story is tied to the Ascanians: Otto the Rich and his son Albert the Bear set up a Benedictine monastery here in 1123, the castle holds Albert's tomb, and in 1765 Prince Frederick Albert moved his residence here from Bernburg. A roughly one-kilometre avenue leads to the castle and its 52-hectare park, redesigned by Lenné as an Italian terrace garden. Our homes are spread widely across the eastern Harz, not in the town. The old town keeps its Late Gothic St. Nicholas' Church, two town halls and parts of the wall, but evenings are quiet.
The neighbouring town about 10 km from Ballenstedt, and the end point of the Selke valley trail.
A 67 km footpath from Stiege to Quedlinburg that passes through Ballenstedt, Güntersberge, Alexisbad and Mägdesprung.
The Gegensteine nature reserve and the Teufelsmauer are both nearby sights for walkers exploring the Ballenstedt area.
Town on the Selke in the lower eastern Harz, at about 400 metres, with a mid-16th-century castle and narrow gauge trains via Alexisbad.
Ballenstedt is on the B 185 road, which connects to the B 6 and the A 14 motorway. Train services to the town were suspended in 2003, so public transport is limited. Because the homes are spread across a wide area, a car is the only practical way to get around.
The castle holds the tomb of Albert the Bear, an exhibition on the early Ascanians, rooms of the former princely residence and a film museum. Outside, the Lenné-designed park covers about 52 hectares.
Often, yes. A good share of the homes sleep eight or more, the largest far beyond that. They are widely spread, so check each listing for its exact village and garden.
Not any more. Train services to Ballenstedt were suspended in 2003. The road in is the B 185, which links via the B 6 to the A 14 motorway.
About 10 km, with Ballenstedt lying south-east of Quedlinburg. The 67 km Selketalstieg passes through Ballenstedt and ends in Quedlinburg, so walkers can link the two on foot.
