Grächen suits families who want a car-free village centre and a small ski area, on a terrace above St. Niklaus in the Mattertal. The trade-off is the journey: from Geneva airport it is just under three hours by road and nearer three and a half by train.
Grächen is a village of about 1,250 people at 1,620 metres, on a terrace above St. Niklaus, north of the Mischabel range. The village centre is car-free, and our homes are packed tightly around it. The Hannigalp cable car, with its Fairy Tale Gondolas, gives access to the ski area, which has about 40 km of slopes and 11 lifts. There is a natural ice rink, toboggan runs and fondue in a gondola. In summer the focus shifts to bisse walks along irrigation channels, the Magic Water Trail with play islands and Robi's Forest Playground, which has a zipline and a petting zoo. The village is German-speaking and small, so evenings are quiet.
The Europaweg high-level hiking route runs about 40 km from Grächen to Zermatt, and the route can be shortened by postbus and train.
A 494 metre pedestrian bridge near Randa, on the Europaweg route, suspended up to 85 metres above the ravine. Opened in 2017.
A village at 1,800 metres with a car-free centre, reached by postal bus from Visp and Brig, with 150 km of ski runs and an underground funicular.
Geneva is the usual airport: trains to Visp take about two and a half hours, and the full train journey to Grächen about three hours twenty-five, or under three hours by car. The village centre is car-free, so ask where to leave a car. A car is useful, but not essential.
The ski season runs from mid-December to early April, with the Hannigalp cable car as the way up. Summer is for bisse walks, the Magic Water Trail and the Europaweg hike toward Zermatt. Outside those seasons, check lift and cable car timetables before booking a shoulder-season week.
Yes. The village centre is car-free, and there is a dedicated children's offer: Robi's Forest Playground with a zipline and petting zoo, the Fairy Tale Gondolas on the Hannigalp, and the Zappelpfad trail with a game backpack.
Yes, on the Europaweg, a 40 km route through the Mattertal and its 29 four-thousand-metre peaks, over the Charles Kuonen bridge to the Europa Hut. You can shorten it using the postbus and train.
The village centre is car-free, according to Switzerland Tourism. Check where each home sits relative to the centre, and where to park, when you book.
Zermatt is much bigger, with a ski area that reaches the Klein Matterhorn at 3,883 metres and links to Italy. Grächen has about 40 km of slopes between 1,619 and 2,864 metres, and suits a quieter, family-led week.
The Charles Kuonen Suspension Bridge is near Randa on the Europaweg, not in Grächen itself. It is 494 metres long and hangs up to 85 metres above the ravine, so allow a full hiking day.
