Crans-Montana suits golfers and skiers who want a plateau resort above the Rhône valley, with views from Mont Blanc to the Matterhorn. It has around 10,000 residents, so expect a small town with a resort spread across it rather than a village.
Crans-Montana sits on a plateau about 1,500 metres up, above Sierre in French-speaking Valais. The municipality was formed in 2017 from Chermignon, Mollens, Montana and Randogne, so the resort takes in several former communities rather than one centre. Golf-Club Crans-sur-Sierre has four courses and hosts the Omega European Masters each September. A walk past nine lakes is the classic summer outing. In winter the ski area has 140 km of pistes, up to the Plaine Morte glacier. The homes sit within a couple of kilometres of each other, mostly sleeping around four. Some have a pool or a sauna, and many have a fireplace.

Geneva Airport is the usual choice, around two and a half hours by road. Trains from the airport to Sierre run hourly and take roughly two and a quarter to two and three-quarter hours. The funicular then climbs from beside Sierre station to Montana, so a car is helpful but not essential.
Winter brings the ski area up to the Plaine Morte glacier, a snow park at Cry d'Er, toboggan runs, an ice rink among the largest in Switzerland and a lantern path. Summer is for golf, lake walks, hiking and cycling, with maps for both included with the My Explorer Card. September brings the Omega European Masters golf tournament.
Yes. Golf-Club Crans-sur-Sierre has four courses, including one designed by Seve Ballesteros and one named after Jack Nicklaus, and it hosts the Omega European Masters each September. There is also a golf academy and a year-round indoor golf centre.
By train and funicular. Trains run from Geneva Airport to Sierre, and the Sierre to Montana to Crans funicular starts beside Sierre station. Bus connections also exist, though the trip takes longer than the train.
No. It is a municipality created on 1 January 2017 by merging Chermignon, Mollens, Montana and Randogne, and the ski resort itself spans three municipalities. With about 10,000 residents, it is a small town rather than a single village.
Plenty outdoors. A walk along the nine lakes is the standard outing, and there are also hiking, golf, cycling, the Ro bisse path from Lake Tseuzier, a tour to Bella Lui, the Saint-Léonard underground lake and the Pfyn-Finges Nature Park.
Yes, the ski area includes the Plaine Morte glacier, topped by the Pointe de la Plaine Morte at 2,927 metres. The whole ski area has 140 km of pistes. Check snow conditions before planning a trip around the glacier itself.
