Nendaz suits groups who want a chalet with an open fire and access to the 4 Vallées, with over 400 km of slopes shared with Verbier. Many homes sleep six or more. The trade-off is the transfer: Geneva airport is about two hours away by car and around three by public transport.
Haute-Nendaz is the resort village of a large commune of about 15 villages and hamlets, sitting on a plateau between about 1,300 and 1,500 metres on the left bank of the Rhône, with Siviez higher up at 1,760 metres. It ranks among the larger Valais resorts, with around 20,000 beds, and its tourism dates from the first Tracouet cable car in 1958. The homes we list sit within about a kilometre of each other, and they run larger than most Alpine stock, with plenty sleeping six or eight and open fires common. From Siviez, lifts head towards both Verbier and Veysonnaz. Summer brings walking along the bisses, old irrigation channels, of which eight survive and six still carry water.
Valais capital about half an hour away, with the Valère basilica and the ruined Tourbillon castle on two hills above the old town.
Neighbouring 4 Vallées village at about 1,233 metres, with the Piste de l'Ours, which hosted World Cup races in January 2004.
At 285 metres, the world's tallest gravity dam, holding back the Lac des Dix at the head of the Val d'Hérémence.
Small dark lake, also called Lac Noir, near the top of the Tracouet gondola from Haute-Nendaz.
Geneva is the usual airport, about 170 km and around two hours by car up the Rhône valley; Zurich is about three hours twenty. By public transport, take the train to Sion and then the PostBus up to Haute-Nendaz; allow about three hours from Geneva. A car is useful but not essential.
Winter is about the 4 Vallées, with lifts from Siviez towards Verbier and Veysonnaz. Summer is a full season of its own: five lifts run to the high points, including the Mont-Fort lift to around 3,300 metres, there are mountain bike trails, and the bisses, old channels that still carry water, make for long walks. Drive times above assume clear roads, so allow longer in snow.
Yes, especially larger ones. Many homes sleep six or more, and summer brings walks along the bisses and mountain bike trails. Check how far your chalet is from the Tracouet gondola, as the resort spreads across a plateau.
Not essential. PostBuses run several times a day between Sion station and Haute-Nendaz, about half an hour each way. A car makes shopping and day trips to the Grande Dixence easier.
Yes. Nendaz is part of the 4 Vallées with Verbier, La Tzoumaz, Veysonnaz, Thyon and Les Collons, and Siviez is the starting point of lifts to both Verbier and Veysonnaz. Together the area has over 400 km of slopes.
Geneva, about two hours by car on clear roads, or about three hours by train to Sion and then the bus. Zurich takes around three hours twenty by car. Sion itself has only a small airfield with limited routes.
Walking along the bisses, mountain biking and riding the five summer lifts, including Mont-Fort at around 3,300 metres. Day trips include Sion's old town and the Grande Dixence, the world's tallest gravity dam.
