Aveiro and the Ria
This is where most of our homes in Beira are. Aveiro sits on the Ria de Aveiro, a wide lagoon of salt pans and channels, and painted moliceiro boats take visitors round its canals. The centre has Art Nouveau houses and bakeries selling ovos moles, the local egg-yolk sweet. Trains to Porto take around an hour, and Porto airport is about an hour by car.
Best for: A small canal city with beaches 15 minutes away
Not for you if: You want a quiet old town in summer: the canal boats and centre fill with day-trippers from Porto.
Costa Nova, Barra and Vagos (Gafanha da Encarnação, Ponte de Vagos, Praia de Mira)
Gafanha da Encarnação takes in Costa Nova, known for its striped wooden houses, with ocean beach on one side and the lagoon on the other. Praia da Barra, next door, has Portugal's tallest lighthouse. Ponte de Vagos is a few minutes inland from Praia da Vagueira. At Praia de Mira, further south, fishing boats are still hauled up the beach. Porto airport is around an hour away.
Best for: Beach weeks with a calm lagoon on one side
Not for you if: You want warm, gentle sea: Atlantic waves and currents here need care, and lifeguarded beaches are the safe choice.
Espinho, Esmoriz and Ovar (north coast)
Espinho is a seaside town on a grid of numbered streets, with a casino, a long promenade and a big Monday market. Trains reach Porto in around half an hour. Praia de Esmoriz and Praia de Cortegaça, to the south, have long beaches with boardwalks over the dunes. Ovar is known for its carnival in February. Porto airport is 30 to 40 minutes away.
Best for: Beach and Porto together, with trains into the city
Not for you if: You want rural quiet: this coast is built up and close to Porto's suburbs.
Santa Maria da Feira and Arouca
Santa Maria da Feira has a hilltop castle and holds the Viagem Medieval, a large costumed festival, each summer. Sanguedo is just north of the town. Arouca, about 45 minutes inland, is the base for the Passadiços do Paiva, a boardwalk trail along the Paiva gorge, and the 516 Arouca suspension bridge. Book both online in summer. Porto airport is 45 minutes to an hour and a quarter away.
Best for: Castles, gorge walks and a medieval festival
Not for you if: You want lots of choice: we only have a handful of homes here.
Figueira da Foz and the Coimbra side (Buarcos, Reveles, Covões)
Buarcos is the old fishing quarter at the north end of Figueira da Foz's enormous sandy beach, with fish grills along the front. Reveles is inland, near the castle of Montemor-o-Velho above the Mondego rice fields, and Covões is in the countryside near Cantanhede. Coimbra, with its old hilltop university, is around 45 minutes away. Choice here is limited.
Best for: A big beach plus day trips to Coimbra
Not for you if: You want a short transfer: Porto and Lisbon airports are both around one and a half to two hours away.
Inland Beira (Fornos de Algodres, Nelas, Aguiar da Beira, Tábua)
This is granite and pine country. Nelas is in the Dão wine area, Fornos de Algodres and Aguiar da Beira are small hill towns, and Serra da Estrela cheese is made in the villages around them. The Serra da Estrela, the highest mountains in mainland Portugal, is within an hour. Tábua is near the Serra do Açor, with river beaches and the schist village of Piódão. Porto airport is about two hours away.
Best for: Walkers, wine and river beaches away from the coast
Not for you if: You want the sea: the coast is at least an hour and a half away.
