About Ovar / Praia de Esmoriz
Furadouro is Ovar's main beach area, about 4 km from the city centre, with Ovar itself at the northern point of the Ria de Aveiro. The beach runs for several kilometres, with fine golden sand, natural dunes and a maritime pine forest close by. Arte xávega, a traditional way of hauling fishing nets in from the shore, has its own zone at the south of the beach, kept apart from bathers. Groynes to the north and sea walls are there against erosion. In the summer bathing season the population swells to about 20,000. The homes are grouped together at Furadouro rather than at Esmoriz, the municipality's other city. Most have a pool and a garden.
