Gafanha da Encarnação is a village parish in Ílhavo, near Aveiro, for short breaks by the ria with Costa Nova and museums close at hand. It is a village rather than a resort, so evenings are quiet and you will drive to the beach.
Gafanha da Encarnação is a village and civil parish of about five thousand people in the municipality of Ílhavo. The Gafanhas are land reclaimed from the river over the centuries, and the soil grows potatoes, corn, beans and cabbage. Ílhavo itself is about 3 km from Aveiro on the flat lowlands along the lower Vouga, by the ria. Our homes sit close together within the parish, mostly small and for around four people, with few gardens and very few with a private pool. Evenings are quiet. For a day out, Costa Nova is known for its brightly coloured fishermen's houses, and the Maritime Museum in Ílhavo has a codfish aquarium.
Known for its brightly coloured fishermen's houses, and home to the Cais Criativo space, lively in summer and quieter in winter.

A beach reached by heading for Vagos and crossing the southernmost arm of the river delta to the coast.
Porto airport is about one hour away by car. By public transport the trip takes over two and a half hours, by metro and train to Aveiro and then the line 36 bus, so a hire car is far easier for the beaches and sights around Ílhavo.
Costa Nova's Cais Criativo space is lively in summer and quieter in winter, while the parish itself is a village rather than a resort. The Maritime Museum in Ílhavo and the Vista Alegre museum suit grey days, but check their opening times before you go. Whatever the season, plan on having a car.
Not on it. Gafanha da Encarnação is a village parish on land reclaimed from the river by the ria, not a beach resort. Vagueira beach is reached via Vagos across the southern arm of the river delta, so plan to drive to the sand.
Visit the Maritime Museum in Ílhavo with its codfish aquarium, tour the Vista Alegre porcelain museum, see the coloured fishermen's houses at Costa Nova, or spend a day in Aveiro, about 3 km from Ílhavo.
About one hour by car. Public transport takes over two and a half hours with changes in Porto and Aveiro, so most visitors hire a car for the stay.
It is quiet. The parish is a village, and even Costa Nova's Cais Criativo space turns introspective in winter, so expect a calm stay with museums and Aveiro for rainy days rather than beach life.
