Camaiore gives families hill-and-garden villas a short drive from the Versilia beaches, with Pisa airport 37 minutes away. The town itself is inland, so every beach day starts with a car or bus ride.
Camaiore is the largest municipality in Versilia, with about 32,000 residents, and it runs from the Apuan Alps down to the coast. The old centre sits in a wide valley at the foot of the mountains, with a Collegiate Church from 1278 and the Lombard Abbey of San Pietro on the Via Francigena. Lido di Camaiore, the beach resort, is a separate place on the coast, about 12 minutes away. Our homes are spread over about six kilometres, most with a garden, many with a fireplace and a good share with a pool, and some very large houses for big groups. Fewer than half have air conditioning, so check the listing for July. At Corpus Domini, in late May or early June, the centre is carpeted with sawdust pictures.
Blue Flag beach resort with a boardwalk about 3 km long, ending in a pier and rotunda; about 12 minutes by car.
Walled city about 32 minutes away by road, or 49 minutes on the direct bus.
Village known for painted murals since 1950, with the Grotta all'Onda, a karst cave with waterfalls, nearby.
The southernmost point of Versilia, just south of Lido di Camaiore, with fashionable cafés and a young nightlife crowd.
Pisa airport is the one to use, about 34 km and 37 minutes by road, with easyJet from Gatwick and Luton and Ryanair from Stansted. Public transport means a train to Viareggio and a bus, nearly two hours, so a car is needed for villas in the hills.
Beach season is summer, when the Lido boardwalk and pier fill at sunset. In late May or early June, Corpus Domini turns the old centre into a display of sawdust carpets, some reaching 40 metres. The fireplaces in many of our homes suit colder months, when the mountains behind Camaiore are the draw. We found no published opening dates for Lido beach clubs, so ask before an out-of-season trip.

In late May or early June, depending on the date of Easter. The historic centre is covered with sawdust carpets called pula, some up to 40 metres long, and it is one of the highlights of the town's year.
