Porto Pozzo suits couples and small families after a quiet inlet base about 8 km from Santa Teresa Gallura, on Sardinia's northern tip. Most homes are small, often with a single bedroom, so larger groups have little to choose from and should look early.
Porto Pozzo is a small hamlet belonging to Santa Teresa Gallura, set on an inlet with a lagoon in front of the village. The lagoon is still fished under licence for sea bass, bream, sole and grey mullet. Tradition places the Odyssey here: this is said to be the inlet where Odysseus's fleet sheltered and was wrecked by the giant Laestrygonians. The homes are spread over several kilometres of coast and countryside around the hamlet, so check how far yours is from the water. Most sleep two to four, many have air conditioning and some have a private pool. Evenings are low-key, and Santa Teresa is the place for bars and live music. That town's population of around 5,000 swells to between 10,000 and 15,000 in summer, which tells you how quiet the rest of the year can be.
The nearest town, about 8 km away, with Rena Bianca beach just north of the centre and Corsica visible across the strait.
Granite ridges and boulders above Cala Grande, about 4 km beyond Santa Teresa, reached by a narrow 700-metre path from a small car park.
The sea gateway to the Maddalena archipelago, with the granite Capo d'Orso rock, over 120 metres high, just outside town.
The Corsican town across the strait, reached by Moby Lines or Blu Navy ferry from Santa Teresa Gallura's harbour.
Olbia is the airport to use, a drive of just under an hour. In summer, buses run between Santa Teresa Gallura and Olbia airport several times a day, but the quieter beaches are only practical with your own transport, so hire a car. Alghero is the other airport in the north.
Summer is when this coast fills: Santa Teresa's population more than doubles with visitors, and both the Olbia airport bus and the frequent bus out to Capo Testa run to a summer timetable, so check services before an off-season trip. Spring and autumn are calmer. Check restaurant opening before an off-season stay, as the hamlet itself has little.
For smaller families, yes. Most homes here sleep two to four, many have air conditioning and some have a private pool, and the hamlet itself is quiet at night. Few homes sleep more than eight, so bigger groups should book early or look at Palau or Santa Teresa Gallura as well.
Just under an hour by car, about 32 miles. Buses do run, but the journey takes from about an hour and three quarters to nearly three hours, so most visitors collect a hire car at the airport.
Easily, via Santa Teresa Gallura, about 8 km away, where Moby Lines and Blu Navy ferries sail to Bonifacio. On a clear day Corsica's southern coast is visible from the beach on the strait.
Drive to Santa Teresa Gallura and take the road out to Capo Testa, about 4 km. After the isthmus, follow the signs for about 1 km to a small car park, then walk a narrow, winding path of around 700 metres. Entry is free.
Pick Porto Pozzo for quiet and Santa Teresa for convenience. The town has Rena Bianca beach right by the centre, some nightlife with live music and the Corsica ferries, while Porto Pozzo is a small hamlet on an inlet about 8 km away.
