Cannigione is a former fishing village on the Gulf of Arzachena, for couples and families wanting summer boat trips to La Maddalena. Most homes are small places for two to four, and few have a private pool, so the days revolve around beaches and boats.
Cannigione began as a fishing village in the early 1900s and grew with beach tourism from the nearby Costa Smeralda. It now has about 1,250 residents and belongs to the comune of Arzachena, about 5 km away. It sits on the Gulf of Arzachena, a long, fjord-like inlet, and fishing is now a sideline to the tourist harbour, where boats leave in summer for the La Maddalena archipelago. Just outside town the Rio San Giovanni reaches the gulf through the Saloni ponds, one of the main wetlands in northern Sardinia. The seaside area of La Conia has grown into Cannigione. Our homes are close together in and around the town, mostly small homes for two to four, many with a garden and air conditioning; a few sleep larger families.
Harbour town around 18 minutes away and the car-ferry port for La Maddalena; the bear-shaped Roccia dell'Orso stands just outside.
Archipelago reached by ferry from Palau; Caprera, joined by a causeway, was Garibaldi's last home.
Costa Smeralda town around 19 minutes' drive, where you can see the super yachts come in during the evening.
Bronze Age Nuragic giants' grave near Arzachena with a central stele about four metres high; Nuraghe La Prisgiona is close by.
Olbia airport is about 35 minutes by car. Sun Lines buses run from the airport to Cannigione a few times a day and take well over an hour and a half, so most people hire a car. Drivers can also bring a car over on the ferry from Genoa or Livorno.
Boat trips to the islands leave the harbour in summer, which is the season most people come for. July and August are the hottest months around Olbia, and July is the sunniest and almost dry, so shade and air conditioning matter. The wettest months run from October to February, with December the wettest. Outside summer, reach La Maddalena on the car ferry from Palau.
Yes, for families who like beaches and boats. Homes are mostly small, two-bedroom places with gardens and air conditioning, and summer boats to the La Maddalena islands leave from the town harbour. Few homes have a pool, so beach days do the work.
In summer, yes: boats for the archipelago leave from Cannigione's tourist harbour. Out of season, drive about 18 minutes to Palau, where car ferries cross to La Maddalena island.
Around 35 minutes by car, roughly 30 km. A Sun Lines bus also runs a few times a day but takes about an hour and 40 minutes, which is why most visitors hire a car at the airport.
Pick Cannigione for a long gulf and summer boats from the doorstep, or Palau to sit by the ferry to La Maddalena. They are about 18 minutes apart by road, so either works as a base for the other.
Few do. Most homes here are small places with a garden and air conditioning instead. If a private pool matters, filter for one when you book, as choice is limited.
