Traben-Trarbach is a Mosel wine town with Jugendstil buildings, vaulted cellars under the streets and castle ruins on the hill above. Homes are mostly small, often for two or three, and none have a pool. It suits wine, cycling and boat trips, though the climb to the ruins is steep.
Traben and Trarbach were two villages on opposite banks of the Mosel, joined by a bridge and merged in 1904. After the 1857 fire Trarbach was rebuilt in the fashion of the day, with many buildings by the Jugendstil architect Bruno Möhring, including the bridge gate of 1899. The town was long a major wine trading centre, and vaults up to 120 metres long run under the streets. The homes lie within a small area of the town. Most are small, with one bedroom, built for two or three, and a few have a sauna. The centre is easy on foot, but the climb to the ruins above is steep.
