Walkers and wine lovers get a Rhine Gorge base in Sankt Goar, facing the Loreley below the ruins of Burg Rheinfels. Most homes are small, for couples, and part of the town sits up on the plateau rather than by the river, so check where your home is.
Sankt Goar is a small town of under 3,000 people on the west bank of the Middle Rhine, almost directly opposite the Loreley rock. The Rhine Gorge here has been a World Heritage Site since 2002, and tourism is the town's main trade. The ruins of Burg Rheinfels, founded in 1245, stand above the town. Besides the riverside centre, the town takes in Biebernheim and Werlau on the heights and Fellen and An der Loreley along the river. Vineyards are planted mainly with Riesling. The homes are grouped in one spot near the town; most sleep two, though some take larger groups, and most have a garden, but check each listing.
The town on the opposite bank, reached by the Loreley ferry across a stretch of Rhine about 250 m wide.
The best-known feature of the Rhine Gorge, rising on the east bank slightly upstream of Sankt Goar.
The city about 24 km north of Sankt Goar as the crow flies, known as the northern gateway to the World Heritage stretch.
Fly to Frankfurt; the drive from Frankfurt Airport takes around an hour. By rail, one route is the S8 to Mainz and a regional train on to Sankt Goar station, about two hours in all, with only occasional direct trains. A car helps for homes away from the river.
By the Loreley ferry, which links Sankt Goar directly with Sankt Goarshausen on the far bank, where the river is about 250 m wide.
It was founded in 1245. The ruins stand above the town, one of the castles the Middle Rhine is famous for; roughly 40 hilltop castles were built along the gorge.
Yes. Take the S8 to Mainz and change to the regional train to Sankt Goar, around two hours in total; a direct service runs only occasionally, and the station is unstaffed.
Mostly Riesling. Sankt Goar's vineyards lie in the Rheinburgengau subregion, and the gorge's slopes have long been terraced, with the south-facing ones best suited to vines.
