Boppard suits couples who want a Rhine Gorge wine town with a chairlift, river boats and trains along the left bank. Most homes here sleep two, with a few for four, so it does not work for families or groups needing space.
Boppard is a town of about 15,600 people on the left bank of the Rhine, inside the Rhine Gorge World Heritage Site. Just north of town the river makes its greatest bend, the Bopparder Hamm, and around 75 hectares of vineyards make Boppard the biggest wine centre of the Middle Rhine, growing Riesling, Müller-Thurgau and Pinot Noir. The old town keeps a wall with defences dating back to Roman times, the late Romanesque church of St Severus and the electoral castle, now the town museum. Restaurants line the old town and the riverside promenade. The homes are spread around the town, and the chairlift closes from November to March.
Viewpoint at the top of a 915 m chairlift from the Mühltal, where the bends of the Rhine look like several small lakes.
Restaurant with a panoramic terrace about five minutes' walk from the top chairlift station above Boppard.
One of Germany's steepest lines, climbing from Boppard to Emmelshausen over two viaducts and through five tunnels.
Fly to Frankfurt; Boppard is about an hour and a quarter from the airport by car or train. Trains on the West Rhine line run every hour or two to Mainz and Cologne, each about 90 minutes away, and KD boats call here, so a car is optional.
Yes. Boppard is on the West Rhine Railway with trains to Mainz and Cologne every hour or two, KD river boats call on the Cologne to Mainz route, and the Hunsrück line climbs to Emmelshausen.
Seasonally, with a closure from November to March. The 915 m ride climbs 232 m from the entrance to the Mühltal towards the Vierseenblick viewpoint, and the Gedeonseck terrace is about five minutes' walk from the top.
Riesling, Müller-Thurgau and Pinot Noir. With around 75 hectares of vines, Boppard is the biggest wine-growing centre in the Middle Rhine region, and the vineyards sit by the river's greatest bend just north of town.
It is. Walking part of the Rheinburgenweg is an easy outing from town, and in season the chairlift saves 232 m of climbing on the way up to the Vierseenblick above the bend.
