About Gilleleje
Gilleleje is the northernmost point of Zealand and a fishing town first, a resort second. Its harbour is the fifth largest commercial fishing harbour in Denmark, with the outer harbour finished in 1902, and the whole urban area covers only about five square kilometres. The church, inaugurated in 1538, is where Jewish refugees were hidden in October 1943 before an informer gave them away, and several memorials in town now honour them. Our homes are scattered over a few kilometres around the town rather than gathered in one estate. Most have a fireplace, only a few have a pool, and few sleep more than eight. The point of Gilbjerg lies just west of the town limits.
Is Gilleleje right for you?

Getting to Gilleleje
Fly into Copenhagen. Kystbanen, the Coast Line, links Copenhagen with Helsingør, with trains up to every ten minutes, and the Hornbæk Line runs on along the Øresund coast to Gilleleje, with a second line from Hillerød. A car is easier for homes scattered around the town.
When to go to Gilleleje
Gilleleje is a working fishing port as well as a resort, so it is more than a July destination. Summer is when the sandy beaches along this coast, such as Hornbæk and Rågeleje, are the draw. Most of the homes have a fireplace, which makes sense in cooler months. Check individual attractions' opening times before an off-season trip.

Gilleleje villa holidays: questions answered
Is Gilleleje a real fishing town or just a holiday resort?
It is both. Gilleleje harbour is the fifth largest commercial fishing harbour in Denmark, and the town has also been a seaside resort since the early 1900s, with bathing hotels and villas.
Can you reach Gilleleje from Copenhagen without a car?
Yes, by train. The Coast Line runs between Copenhagen and Helsingør, and the Hornbæk Line continues from Helsingør to Gilleleje. A second line runs from Hillerød. Homes are spread around the town, so some will still mean a walk or bike ride.
Gilleleje or Hornbæk for a holiday home?
Hornbæk is known for its large sandy beaches, marina and cafés, while Gilleleje is the bigger working harbour and the northernmost point of Zealand. Pick Hornbæk for a beach-first stay and Gilleleje for the fishing-town feel.
Is there any history to see in Gilleleje?
Yes. The church was inaugurated in 1538, and in October 1943 Jewish refugees hid in its loft until an informer told the Germans. Several memorials in town honour them. Down at the harbour, the outer basin was finished in 1902.
Do holiday homes in Gilleleje have pools?
Only a few do. Most have a fireplace, and some have a sauna, so this is a place to book for the beach and harbour rather than for a private swim.
