Nykøbing Sjælland suits families and couples who want a holiday home near the sandy beaches of Sejerø Bay and a proper shopping street. It sits on the Isefjord with Rørvig's harbour nearby. The catch is distance: the homes are spread out and the west-coast beaches are a drive from town.
Nykøbing Sjælland is a small seaside town on the Isefjord in north-west Zealand, with a pedestrian shopping street, Algade, and a station at the northern end of the Odsherred line. The homes are spread around the area rather than gathered in town, some near Nykøbing and others towards the west coast, which is almost entirely lined with leisure housing. Most sleep around six, usually with three bedrooms and a fireplace; a pool is unusual and only a minority have a sauna. Tengslemark on Sejerø Bay is broad sand with a gently shelving bottom, but you will drive to it. Evenings are low key: a handful of restaurants, including one on Algade, a fjord-view café and the Odsherred Theatre. Newer houses in the area are insulated for winter use, so a cold-season stay is possible, just quiet.
Broad sandy beach on Sejerø Bay with dunes and a gently shelving bottom, good for windsurfing and kitesurfing in the right weather.
Harbour village on the Isefjord and the landing point for the half-hour ferry across to Hundested.
One of Denmark's oldest castles, dating from around 1215, built where the peninsula joins the rest of Zealand at its narrowest.
The tip of Odden and the westernmost point of Zealand, with a small path down to the water.
About 2 km south of Nykøbing, holding Northern Europe's largest privately owned collection of antique glass.
Copenhagen is the practical airport, a little over an hour by car. The train takes around two hours forty with a change at Holbæk, and the homes are spread out, so a hire car is the sensible choice. The Hundested to Rørvig ferry crosses the Isefjord in about half an hour, in daylight hours only.
Summer is the season, and the beaches and cafés fill in the school holidays. Several local fixtures run on a short calendar: Rørvig Fisk opens April to October and the Vig flea market runs on Saturdays from Easter to mid-October. Outside high season the ferry stops sailing at around 18:00. Autumn and winter are quiet, with few places open.
Yes, if you want a real town nearby. Nykøbing has a pedestrian shopping street and a rail link to Holbæk, while the sandy west-coast beaches are a short drive away.
It is. Tengslemark on Sejerø Bay is broad and sandy with dunes, and its gently shelving bottom suits young children. Dogs on a lead are allowed there.
Roughly an hour by car, about 64 miles by road according to route planners. By train it takes much longer, around two hours forty minutes with a change at Holbæk.
Nykøbing is the northern terminus of the Odsherred line, which runs to Holbæk for connections to the national network. Most of the houses, though, are out of walking range of the station.
Head for the Hempel Glas Museum just south of town, join the Saturday guided tour at Dragsholm castle, or catch a show at the Odsherred Theatre. All three are indoors and within a short drive.
