Tux suits skiers who want the Hintertux glacier on hand, with year-round skiing up to 3,250 metres. Our homes mostly sleep eight or more, which helps groups. The valley is a string of small villages, so evenings are low-key and none of the homes has a pool.
Tux takes up the upper and largest part of the Tuxertal, a side valley that leaves the Zillertal at Mayrhofen, with the municipality at about 1,280 metres. There is no single centre. Vorderlanersbach, Lanersbach, Juns, Madseit and Hintertux line the road up the valley, and Hintertux sits at the foot of the glacier. A free Tuxer Sportbus links Vorderlanersbach and Hintertux by day, and in winter a paid Nightliner runs until 2 a.m. for anyone eating out down the valley. Our homes are grouped within about 2 km of each other and are mostly large, with three or four bedrooms; a few have a sauna, and none has a pool. In summer the same slopes turn to hiking trails, waterfalls and marmots.
Year-round skiing between about 1,500 and 3,250 metres, with roughly 62 km of winter pistes and the Gletscherbus 3 bicable gondola.
Over 10 km long and the largest cave in the Austrian Central Alps, visited only on guided tours from beside the Spannagelhaus hut.
Where the Tuxertal branches off the Zillertal, at the end of the Zillertalbahn line, between the Penken and Ahorn ski mountains.
Village on the way down to Mayrhofen with the Teufelsbrücke timber bridge from 1876 and the Tuxbachklamm gorge.
Innsbruck is the nearest airport, about 90 km and roughly an hour and a quarter by car. Without a car, take the train to Jenbach, the Zillertalbahn to Mayrhofen and bus 4104 up the valley; the free Sportbus then covers Tux itself.
Winter brings the full Hintertux, Eggalm and Rastkogel ski areas, with Rastkogel linked to the Penken. The glacier keeps about 18 km of pistes open in summer, so July can mean skiing in the morning and the Tux theme trails or the Grüblspitze panorama walk, which starts from Eggalm, later in the day.
Yes. The Hintertux glacier has offered year-round skiing since 1968, with about 18 km of pistes kept open in summer. Snow and firn last through the warm months at this height, and the area tops out at 3,250 metres.
Three, all inside the valley. Eggalm leaves from Lanersbach, a gondola climbs from Vorderlanersbach to Rastkogel, which links to Mayrhofen's Penken, and the Hintertux glacier rises above the head of the valley.
Mostly, yes. Tux is five small villages strung along one road rather than a resort town, so expect quiet evenings rather than a nightlife scene. In winter a paid Nightliner bus runs until 2 a.m. if you want to go out further down.
Not for skiing. The free Tuxer Sportbus runs by day between Vorderlanersbach and Hintertux, and bus 4104 connects with the Zillertalbahn at Mayrhofen. A car only earns its keep for supermarket runs and trips down the Zillertal.
