Fügen, a village of about 4,200 at the entrance to the Zillertal, works well for families, with a thermal spa and the Spieljoch ski area. Some homes have a pool. Mayrhofen is a 20-minute drive further up the valley.
Fügen sits at 545 metres in the Schwaz district, a working village of about 4,200 rather than a purpose-built resort. Our homes are scattered over a few kilometres around it, mostly flats and houses for around five with two bedrooms; some have a pool or sauna and many a garden. The Spieljoch ski area above the village has a funpark, a funslope, a toboggan run and wide pistes, and the Zillertal tourist board quotes 114 km of pistes and 43 lifts for Spieljoch and its neighbours Hochzillertal and Hochfügen. After the lifts close the main indoor option is the Erlebnistherme, which has a wave pool, slides and a heated outdoor salt-water pool, open until 22:00.
Village further up the valley. About 20 minutes by car, or around 35 minutes on the Zillertalbahn train, which runs roughly every half hour.
Ski area above the village, and in summer the start of the Vier-Almen-Marsch hike past mountain huts and home to the Bogenpark archery course.
Village in the same Fügen-Kaltenbach holiday region, base of the Hochzillertal-Kaltenbach cable car, with a high ropes course, a pump track and the Kabooom leisure centre.
Bathing lake listed by the Zillertal tourist board among the local swimming options, alongside Fügen's outdoor pool.
Innsbruck is the nearest airport, about 50 km and 40 minutes by car. easyJet flies from Gatwick, with seasonal British Airways, TUI and further easyJet routes. By public transport there is no direct link: airport bus to Innsbruck station, train to Jenbach, then the Zillertalbahn to Fügen, about 1 hour 10 minutes in all. A car is easier with luggage.
Winter is the main season, with skiing at Spieljoch and the neighbouring Hochzillertal and Hochfügen areas, which in 2025 to 2026 ran from early December to mid April. In summer the Spieljoch cable car runs, with a tubing track, a water park and a children's via ferrata, and there is bathing at Schlitterer See. The thermal spa suits any weather, though in 2026 it closed for maintenance from 8 to 21 June.
