Kappl and its hamlets

Kappl has by far the most of our Paznaun homes, spread through hamlets on the sunny side of the valley as well as the village itself. A gondola climbs from the valley floor into Kappl's own ski area, a family-friendly mix of mostly blue and red runs with a children's area. Ischgl is around 15 to 20 minutes up the valley by car or ski bus. Innsbruck airport is about an hour and a quarter away.

Best for: Families who want their own ski area and better value than Ischgl

Not for you if: You want to walk to a lift: many homes are on the slopes above the village and need a short drive or bus.

See

See is the first village you reach coming up from Landeck, with a gondola from the village to a compact ski area that suits early-stage skiers and families. It has a handful of shops and restaurants and is quieter in the evenings than anywhere up the valley. Landeck, with its supermarkets and railway station, is around 15 minutes down the road, and Innsbruck airport is roughly an hour away.

Best for: Beginners, young families and the shortest drive from Innsbruck

Not for you if: You plan to spend every day in Ischgl: the drive there is around 25 minutes each way.

Ischgl and Mathon

Ischgl is the base for the Silvretta Arena, a large high-altitude ski area that links over the border to Samnaun in Switzerland, where the shops are duty-free. Gondolas leave from the village, and the season opens and closes with big outdoor concerts on the mountain. Our choice here is limited and prices are the valley's highest. Mathon is a small, quieter village about five minutes further up. Innsbruck airport is around an hour and a half away.

Best for: Keen skiers, groups and après-ski

Not for you if: You want quiet evenings in season: Ischgl's bars and clubs run late and the village is loud.

Galtür

Galtür sits at the head of the valley at around 1,600 metres, so snow cover is usually reliable. Its own ski area is smaller and quieter than Ischgl's, around 15 minutes down the road, and there are cross-country trails along the valley floor. The Alpinarium, built into the avalanche wall above the village, is a museum about life with avalanches. In summer the Silvretta High Alpine Road starts here. Innsbruck airport is about an hour and three quarters away.

Best for: Quiet skiing, cross-country trails and summer walking from the door

Not for you if: You want nightlife or a large ski area on your doorstep: Galtür is small and calm.

When to go to Paznaun

Ischgl's ski season runs from late November to early May, one of the longest in the Alps, while Kappl, See and Galtür usually run from early December to mid or late April. Christmas, New Year, February half-term and Easter are the busiest weeks. Summer lifts run roughly from late June or early July to late September, and the valley is good for hut-to-hut walking, mountain biking and high lakes. From mid-May to late June and in October and November, most lifts, hotels and restaurants are closed.
