Kappl suits skiers who want a quieter Paznaun base, with its own Dias-Alpe ski area and Ischgl about 10 km up the valley. Homes here are mostly apartments and chalets for groups. The trade-off is size: Dias-Alpe has about 40 km of groomed runs, against roughly 238 km at Ischgl.
Kappl sits at 1,258 metres in the Paznaun valley, about 17 km southwest of Landeck, and is made up of many small hamlets that grew from old farmsteads. Our homes stay within a few kilometres of each other. Above the village is the Dias-Alpe ski area, with nine lift installations and the 2,640 metre Alblittkopf. Its cabin cable car starts from the valley-floor road below the village centre and also runs in summer. Most homes are apartments and chalets, and a large share sleep eight or more. Pools are not a feature here. For après-ski bars people head to Ischgl, a 13-minute ride on bus line 260.
Bigger resort about 10 km up the valley at 1,377 metres, with roughly 238 km of pistes including Samnaun in Switzerland. Bus line 260 takes about 13 minutes.
Town about 17 km to the northeast. Trains from Innsbruck stop at Landeck-Zams, where line 260 buses leave for Kappl.
The highest of the Paznaun's four main villages at 1,586 metres, with its own ski resort, towards the Bielerhöhe pass at the end of the valley.
The lowest of the four main villages at 1,050 metres, also with its own ski resort.
Innsbruck is the nearest practical airport, about 90 km and roughly an hour by road. British Airways, easyJet and TUI list London flights there, most of them seasonal. There is no direct public transport: bus to Innsbruck station, train to Landeck-Zams, then bus line 260 up the valley, around two hours in all.
Winter is the main season, as skiing drives the local economy, and Innsbruck airport gets much busier then because of the number of skiers flying in, so flight choice is widest in the ski months. Ischgl, ten kilometres away, has the après-ski bars, while Kappl is the calmer place to sleep. The Dias-Alpe cable car also runs in summer, so walkers can ride up.
Yes, if you are content with Kappl's own Dias-Alpe area for most days. It has about 40 km of groomed runs, while Ischgl is about 10 km away by a 13-minute line 260 bus and has roughly 238 km of pistes including Samnaun.
About 90 km, which is roughly an hour by road. Public transport has no direct link and takes closer to two hours, using a bus to Innsbruck station, a train to Landeck-Zams and then bus line 260 to Kappl.
Yes. The cabin cable car to the Dias-Alpe operates in summer as well as winter, so Kappl also works for a walking holiday.
Mostly. Kappl is a village of scattered hamlets rather than a nightlife centre, and its economy rests on skiing. Ischgl, about 10 km up the valley by bus line 260, is where the après-ski bars are.
Choose Kappl for a smaller ski area and a calmer village, and Ischgl for the large lift network. Ischgl sits at 1,377 metres against Kappl's 1,258, and has about six times the groomed pistes.
