About Zermatt
Zermatt is a village of about 5,800 people at 1,620 metres, though visitor numbers at any time are several times higher. Combustion-engine vehicles are banned, to keep the Matterhorn view clear, so you move around on foot and by electric shuttle, taxi, bus or horse-drawn carriage. Our homes are packed tightly around the village. The Gornergrat rack railway, the highest open-air railway in Europe, climbs to 3,089 metres in about 29 minutes. The cable car to the Klein Matterhorn reaches 3,883 metres, and the ski area links to Cervinia in Italy. It gets about 1,650 hours of sun a year, with cool summers. It is the western end of the Glacier Express line.
