Saas-Fee suits skiers who want high glacier slopes and families who like a car-free village, staying in a chalet apartment. Most homes sleep four to six. The trade-off is arrival: cars stay in the car parks at the village entrance, so the last stretch is on foot, by handcart or by e-taxi.
Saas-Fee is the main village of the Saas valley, set on a high plateau at about 1,800 metres and ringed by 13 peaks over 4,000 metres, the highest concentration in the Alps. The centre is car-free, with small electric vehicles running between the hotels and the ski area. It is compact: almost every home we list lies within about a kilometre of the others, mostly apartments in chalets, some with a sauna. The Alpin Express gondola runs to Felskinn, where the Metro Alpin, opened in 1984 and the highest funicular in the world, tunnels up to Mittelallalin at about 3,456 metres. Up there are a large ice cave and the world's highest revolving restaurant. The area has about 150 km of runs.
Village at about 1,559 metres down the valley, with a two-section gondola to Kreuzboden at 2,400 metres and Hohsaas at 3,200 metres.
Reservoir at the southern end of the Saas valley, behind Switzerland's highest earth-fill dam; a 1965 glacier collapse killed 88 workers here.
Rail stop on the main line towards Brig, where PostBus 511 leaves for Saas-Fee, about 50 minutes up the valley.
Geneva, Zurich, Basel and Milan airports are all within about three hours by public transport. Take the train to Visp, then PostBus 511 to Saas-Fee, about 50 minutes. Drivers leave the car in one of the two car parks at the village entrance; holiday home guests can borrow a trolley.
For 2026 the Mittelallalin lifts ran from 5 December 2025 to 19 April 2026 and reopen from 18 July to 31 October, so the high slopes run late into spring and again from midsummer into autumn. Saas-Grund and Saas-Almagell closed earlier in spring, on 6 April. Between those dates the top lifts are shut, so check the lift timetable before booking a shoulder week.
Yes. The centre is car-free, distances are short and about 80 km of the runs are graded for beginners. Some holiday homes provide free handcarts for luggage from the car park, and trolleys can be borrowed for a deposit.
No. Cars cannot enter the village and stay in the covered or open car parks at the entrance. By public transport, take the train to Visp and PostBus 511, which takes about 50 minutes to Saas-Fee.
Often, yes. The Mittelallalin lifts reopen in midsummer, from 18 July to 31 October in 2026, and the slopes up there are mostly open all year. Dates vary each year, so check the lift company's timetable.
Saas-Fee is car-free and has the high glacier lifts up to Mittelallalin. Saas-Grund is lower, at about 1,559 metres, with its own gondola to Kreuzboden and Hohsaas, linked to the rest of the Saas valley by postal bus.
Very high. The ski area tops out at about 3,600 metres with a vertical drop of about 1,800 metres, and the Metro Alpin funicular reaches Mittelallalin at about 3,456 metres. In 2026 the winter season there ran until 19 April.
