About Zuoz
Zuoz stands at 1,716 m on the slope of Munt Albanas and has about 1,200 residents. It was once the political centre of the Upper Engadine, and the square, with its Planta houses and Planta Tower, still shows it. Engadine houses here have sgraffito facades, oriel windows and thick stone walls. Our homes are tightly grouped, mostly with a garden. Some have a sauna or a fireplace, and none has a pool. They mostly sleep around four. The village has its own ski slopes with a children's area, and the 18-hole Zuoz-Madulain golf course is on hand in summer. Evenings mean a handful of cafés and restaurants and the cinema at Hotel Castell.
Is Zuoz right for you?
- Best for
- Quiet stays among preserved Engadine houses, with trails and trains
- Not for you if

Zuoz villa holidays: questions answered
Is Zuoz good for families?
Yes. Zuoz has held a Family Destination seal since 2016, and has a children's ski area, theme trails, children's programmes and a children's golf course. It is a small village, so plan some days out.
What are the decorated facades in Zuoz?
They are sgraffito, ornaments scratched into wet plaster in two colours. The technique came from Italy with migrant workers in the 16th century and is still practised in the Upper Engadine. The Planta houses on the square are good examples.
How far is Zuoz from Zurich?
About 2 hours 35 minutes by car, or just over 4 hours by train via Klosters. That is a long transfer for a short break, so it suits weeks better than weekends.
Does Zuoz have its own ski area?
It does. Zuoz has its own ski slopes, with a children's area where families take first turns and Bar Buera for a break on the piste. Regular trains to St. Moritz and Pontresina leave from Zuoz station if you want to ski elsewhere.
What is Chalandamarz in Zuoz?
A custom on 1 March, when boys dressed as shepherds go from house to house with whips and bells to drive out winter. It builds over two days to the main event on the village square.
