Sils Maria suits walkers and cross-country skiers who want a small Engadine village between two lakes at around 1,800 metres. The whole municipality has only about 700 residents, so there is little here beyond the lakes, the valley and the walks.
Sils Maria and Sils Baselgia make up the municipality of Sils im Engadin. It sits at about 1,800 metres between Lake Sils and Lake Silvaplana, with Piz Corvatsch above and the Val Fex valley opening to the south. Lake Sils is the largest lake in the Engadine, up to 5 km long. Friedrich Nietzsche summered here, and his house has been a museum since 1960. The homes sit in a tight cluster around the village, mostly compact homes for around four, and most have a garden. Few have a pool or a sauna.
A valley south of the village that is closed to traffic except for residents, so it works well on foot.
The largest lake in the Engadine, up to 5 km long, running from Sils at one end to Maloja at the other.
Nietzsche's former home in the village, a museum since 1960; he stayed here in 1881 and from 1883 to 1888.
The next lake along, popular for windsurfing and kitesurfing in summer and crossed by the Engadin Skimarathon each winter.
The pass beyond Lake Sils that connects the Engadine with Val Bregaglia and stays open in winter.
Zurich Airport is the usual choice, around two hours 40 minutes by car. By public transport it takes nearly five hours via Zurich main station, Chur and St. Moritz, ending at the Sils Maria post stop. Samedan airport has limited flights but is not a practical option for most UK visitors. A car is useful, though the rail route works.
Winter is the long season. Lake Silvaplana freezes for cross-country trails, and the Engadin Skimarathon runs from Maloja on the second Sunday of March. The Furtschellas cable car opened in 1972 and made Sils a winter resort as well. Summer suits walking along the lakes and into Val Fex. The Julier and Maloja passes stay open in winter, but the Fluela pass closes outside summer.
No. They are the two main villages of the municipality of Sils im Engadin. The homes listed under Sils Maria sit in a tight cluster around the village rather than spread along the valley.
It is a valley south of the village that is car-free except for residents. The valley belongs to the municipality of Sils, which includes Sils Maria.
Mainly for Friedrich Nietzsche, who summered here in 1881 and from 1883 to 1888. His former home has been a museum since 1960. The Waldhaus hotel opened in 1908, and much of the 2014 film Clouds of Sils Maria is set in the area.
It suits cross-country skiing best, as the Engadin Skimarathon starts at nearby Maloja. A cable car on Furtschellas has run since 1972, but the higher alpine terrain is on Corvatsch, which starts above Surlej near Silvaplana.
Pick Sils Maria for a quieter village between the lakes, with Val Fex and the Nietzsche museum. Silvaplana is the better base for kitesurfing and windsurfing on its lake in summer, and for the Corvatsch cable car, which starts above Surlej.
