Samnaun suits skiers who want the Silvretta Arena shared with Ischgl, from a duty-free Swiss valley village. Homes are mostly small apartments for two to four. The trade-off is remoteness: the valley is far from any major airport, and Innsbruck is over three hours away by public transport.
Samnaun is a small border municipality of under eight hundred residents, made up of five sections: Compatsch, Laret, Plan, Ravaisch and Samnaun itself. The sections sit between roughly 1,700 and 1,840 metres, with the church at 1,844. Locals speak a Bavarian variant of German that is unique in Switzerland. Our homes are spread over a few kilometres of the valley, mostly apartments for four or fewer with no pools. Nearly all of them have Wi-Fi. Restaurants serve classic Swiss menus at Swiss prices, and there is no fast food. In summer the village turns to hiking and mountain biking.
The other half of the Silvretta Arena; the ski area is shared with Samnaun and reaches 2,875 metres.
Down in the Lower Engadine, joined to Samnaun by the road built in 1905; postal buses take about 45 minutes.
The Lower Engadine's main town, reached by postal bus in about an hour and twenty minutes.
Engadine villages that run guided village tours, a useful half-day away from the ski lifts and the shops.
Innsbruck is the closest airport at under three and a half hours by train and bus; Zurich takes over five hours. Postal buses run about a dozen times a day from Martina and Scuol. Two roads lead in, one via Austria and one entirely Swiss, and exceptionally heavy snow sometimes blocks the Swiss one.
In winter the Silvretta Arena runs between 1,400 and 2,875 metres, with a double-decker cable car as the headline lift. Exceptionally heavy snowfall can block the Swiss road, leaving the Austrian route. Summer brings hiking, biking and the Greitspitz via ferrata. The Advent market is listed for 12 December 2026, and duty-free shops open Monday to Saturday and Sunday afternoons.
Yes. Samnaun and Ischgl share the Silvretta Arena, which covers 1,400 to 2,875 metres and has about 238 km of slopes. You ski across the border on the lifts, and it includes the first double-decker cable car in the world.
Yes. Samnaun is a separate duty-free area, billed as the only tax-free resort in Switzerland, and shops sell watches, jewellery, alcohol and tobacco. Swiss customs may check you when you enter or leave, so keep within the allowances.
There are two roads: one through Austria via Spiss and one entirely on Swiss territory from Martina, built in 1905. In winters with exceptionally heavy snowfall the Swiss road can be blocked, and the village can be reached only via Austria.
Hiking, mountain biking and tennis are the main activities, plus the Greitspitz via ferrata and the Murmina and Murmin fairytale trail. The Sennerei Samnaun cheese dairy in Laret makes cheese from valley milk and offers tastings, but a reservation is required.
Mostly no. German is the language of about nine in ten residents, in a Bavarian variant. People spoke a Romansh dialect close to Vallader until the second half of the 19th century.
