About Silvaplana-Surlej
Silvaplana is a village at about 1,815 metres that gives its name to the lake beside it, and Surlej is one of its hamlets. The lake is known for predictable winds, which draw windsurfers, kitesurfers and dinghy sailors, and there is a major watersports centre on the southwest shore. In winter the lake freezes and kitesurfers switch to snow over the ice. The Corvatsch cable car starts above Surlej and climbs into one of the highest ski areas in Switzerland. The homes sit within about a kilometre or so of each other, mostly small homes for around four, and only some have a garden, with few having a pool.
Is Silvaplana-Surlej right for you?

Is Silvaplana-Surlej windy?
Yes, and that is the draw for water sports. The lake is known for predictable winds, which make it popular for windsurfing, kitesurfing and dinghy sailing, and a major watersports centre stands on the southwest shore.
Where is the Corvatsch cable car in relation to Surlej?
It starts above the village of Surlej, east of Silvaplana, so homes in Surlej are the closest to the lift. The lift tops out at about 3,300 metres, and the ski area is among the highest in Switzerland.
Silvaplana-Surlej or Sils Maria for a villa stay?
Silvaplana-Surlej is the better base for the windy lake and the Corvatsch lift. Sils Maria sits between two lakes, with Val Fex and the Nietzsche museum on its doorstep. Both are close together and both have compact homes.
Does the lake at Silvaplana-Surlej freeze?
Yes. In winter Lake Silvaplana freezes and carries cross-country and walking trails. Kitesurfers practise on snow over the ice, and the Engadin Skimarathon crosses the lake every year.
Is Silvaplana-Surlej suitable for a big family group?
Probably not. The homes here are mostly compact homes for two to four, and none is listed for a large party. A group of eight or more would need to look at neighbouring Engadine towns.
