Scuol suits walkers and spa-goers who want the Bogn Engiadina baths, Lower Engadine villages and Motta Naluns skiing. Most homes are small apartments for four or fewer. The trade-off is scale: the ski area is modest, and Zurich is around four hours away by train.
Scuol is the capital of the Lower Engadine, a Romansh-speaking ski and spa resort of around 4,600 people at about 1,300 metres. Its healing springs were used on a larger scale from about 1860, and the Bogn Engiadina bath opened in 1993 to revive the spa trade. Since 2015 the municipality has taken in Ftan, Sent, Guarda, Ardez and Tarasp, making it the largest in Switzerland by area. Our homes cluster tightly around the town, mostly small apartments, some with a garden. Mineral water can be drunk straight from the village well. Winter is for Motta Naluns; summer is for walking in the side valleys, with the Swiss National Park a top excursion.
The landmark of the valley, owned by the Sent artist Not Vital, who has placed his sculptures around it.
A village of sgraffito-decorated houses, home of the Schellen-Ursli story and a starting point of the Via Engiadina stages to Sent.
Lies between Zernez, S-chanf and Scuol, with its visitor centre in Zernez; dogs are banned, even on a lead.
Home to the UNESCO-listed Convent of St. Johann, and linked by PostBus to the main valley from Zernez.
Zurich is the practical airport, around four hours by train, and Innsbruck, listed as the nearest, takes a similar time by train and two buses. The Vereina tunnel, opened in 1999, shortened the trip from Zurich considerably. Scuol-Tarasp station is on the Rhaetian Railway line, which opened in 1913.
Winter brings skiing on Motta Naluns, a FIS Snowboard World Cup event listed for 9 January 2027, and skating at the Gurlaina ice rink. Summer suits walking in Val Sinestra, Val d'Uina and Val S-charl, and the Via Engiadina runs from Guarda via Ardez and Ftan to Sent. In autumn the larches glow golden yellow against the darker conifers.
Yes, if you want a spa day. Bogn Engiadina has indoor and outdoor pools with bubble loungers and a Roman-Irish bath and sauna area. The Guest Card PLUS discounts admission from one overnight stay, and it also gives free public transport.
Motta Naluns covers about 80 km of slopes with 12 lifts, on the southern face towards Piz Champatsch at 2,785 metres. That is a modest area, better for relaxed skiing than for racking up distance.
Yes. Romansh is the official language in Scuol, and in the 2000 census just under half of residents spoke it, with German second. The local idiom is Vallader, the Lower Engadine form of Romansh.
No. Dogs are not allowed in the park, even on a lead, and you must stay on marked paths. Overnight stays are banned except at the Chamanna Cluozza hut, and the visitor centre is in Zernez.
By train. Zurich Airport to Scuol-Tarasp takes about four hours by public transport, with the last stretch on the Rhaetian Railway. Before the Vereina tunnel opened in 1999 the trip from Zurich was considerably longer.
