Vitznau suits couples who want a lakeside village at the foot of the Rigi, with the rack railway climbing from the shore. The village is a narrow strip between lake and mountain, and homes are small, sleeping five at most.
Vitznau is a village of around 1,400 people in the canton of Lucerne, squeezed into a narrow strip between Lake Lucerne and the Rigi. Its rack railway, billed as Europe's oldest cogwheel railway, climbs from 435 m to Rigi Kulm at 1,798 m in around 30 minutes, with four stations inside the municipality. Vitznau is also a ferry terminal with regular Lake Lucerne boats. It became a popular resort in the 19th century, especially with English visitors. Evenings mean a hotel restaurant or a drink at the Verlinde Bar or the Nostalgie Bar. The homes are close together in the village, and most have a garden; check each listing.
