Lucerne suits couples and small families after a walkable lakeside city, with Pilatus and the Rigi close by. Zurich Airport is a little over an hour away. Homes are small apartments, none with a pool, so this is a city break rather than a villa stay.
Lucerne is a city of about 82,000 at the point where Lake Lucerne flows out into the Reuss, with the lake shore at 435 m. The old town has the Chapel Bridge, a covered wooden bridge of about 204 m first built in 1333, and remnants of the town walls on the hill above with eight tall watch towers. A wide lakeside promenade runs from the KKL concert hall to the Museum of Transport. Our homes lie around the city, mostly one-bedroom apartments sleeping around four, with no pools and few gardens. Pilatus is reached via Alpnachstad, and the Rigi from Vitznau. Rain falls through the year, with June the wettest month and February the driest.
Lucerne's local mountain, reached via Alpnachstad, with a fondue gondola and the largest suspension rope park in Switzerland at Fräkmüntegg.
Reached from Vitznau, and one of the two best-known excursion mountains on Lake Lucerne along with Pilatus.
Thorvaldsen's carving of a dying lion, in a small park off the Löwenplatz, remembering the Swiss Guards killed in 1792.
Beside the lake in the north-east of the city, at the far end of the promenade from the KKL.
Zurich Airport is a little over an hour away, and about 40 trains a day connect Zurich with Lucerne in an average 48 minutes. The old town, the promenade and the lake are all on foot, so a car is not needed in the city.
Rain falls all year, and June is the wettest month, February the driest. Summer brings the Lucerne Festival of classical music, and the lakeside swimming pool and pedalos come into their own. Fasnacht starts on the Thursday before Ash Wednesday, at 5 in the morning, with a bang called the Urknall. The Museum Pass covers nine museums, which helps on the wetter days.
Very. The Chapel Bridge runs from the New Town past the water tower to the Town Hall Quay, the Lion Monument is in the city, and a wide promenade follows the lake from the KKL to the Museum of Transport.
You can. Switzerland Tourism says there are many swimming spots around Lake Lucerne, and Lucerne itself has a lakeside swimming pool and pedalos to hire in warmer weather. The pages do not name the individual spots.
It begins on the Thursday before Ash Wednesday, so in late winter, though the date moves each year. The opening comes at 5 in the morning with a detonation called the Urknall, the Big Bang.
By train is simplest. The airport is a little over an hour from Lucerne, and about 40 trains a day link Zurich and Lucerne, taking an average of 48 minutes, so a hire car is not needed.
Both are close. Pilatus is reached via Alpnachstad, and the Rigi from Vitznau. Several cruisers leave from Lucerne's train station every day, and the fleet includes nostalgic paddle steamers, which is a gentler way to see the lake.
