Engelberg suits ski and walking weeks under Mount Titlis, with the cable cars starting in the village itself. The trade-off is weather: the valley sees rain or snow on about 150 days a year, so pack for wet days as well as bright ones.
Engelberg is a village of roughly 4,200 people at about 1,000 metres, built around a Benedictine abbey founded in 1122. The railway from Lucerne ends here, and our homes sit within a couple of kilometres of the centre. The Titlis Xpress gondola climbs from the valley station to Trübsee and on to Stand, and the Rotair, a rotating cable car, carries on to the Klein Titlis station at 3,028 metres. Near the top, the Titlis Cliff Walk, opened in 2012, is the highest-elevation suspension bridge in Europe. Beside the abbey there is a cheese factory with a shop. Brunni, reached by its own cable car, is the gentler option, with beginner to intermediate runs. Winter runs from about December to April, and the village stays open for walkers in summer.
The hourly train takes 45 minutes. Chapel Bridge was first built in 1333, and lake boats leave from Bahnhofquai beside the station.
The lake at the Titlis Xpress middle station, with rowing boats on the water and a continuous ski piste running down past it in winter.
A cable car climbs to Ristis at 1,600 metres, with beginner to intermediate runs in winter and prepared rock climbing routes.
Zurich Airport is the usual choice: take the train to Lucerne, just over an hour, then the hourly train to Engelberg, which takes 45 minutes. By car, leave the A2 at Stans-Süd. With homes close to the centre and local buses from the Titlis station, a car is optional.
The winter season generally runs from December to April, and the upper Titlis glacier runs can be skied from October to May. In summer the lifts open up walking around Trübsee. July is the wettest month and February the driest, so a dry-looking summer week is never guaranteed. The village gets around 1,380 hours of sun a year.
Yes, for people who want height. The Titlis ski area has around 72 km of runs and 19 lifts, glacier skiing from October, and a ski piste down to Unter Trübsee. Brunni is the quieter alternative for beginners.
Take the train: hourly services run from Lucerne to Engelberg and the journey takes about 45 minutes. The line ends in Engelberg, so you cannot miss your stop, and Grafenort is the stop before.
Mostly lift-served walking. Trübsee has rowing boats, the Titlis Cliff Walk crosses a suspension bridge near the top, and Brunni has prepared rock climbing routes. The abbey's cheese factory and the Talmuseum fill a wet day.
Fairly often. The village records rain or snow on about 151 days a year, with July the wettest month at 198 mm. February is the driest, and sunshine adds up to roughly 1,380 hours annually.
It is the Titlis cable car that rotates as it climbs, described as the world's first rotating cable car. It runs to the Klein Titlis station at 3,028 metres, reached after the Titlis Xpress gondola to Stand.
