Flühli LU suits couples and small families who want a quiet base in the UNESCO Entlebuch Biosphere, with Sörenberg's slopes nearby. The village sits at about 884 m on the Waldemme, around 45 minutes by car from Lucerne. Public transport works, but the train and postbus trip from Lucerne takes almost two hours.
Flühli is a small village in the valley of the Waldemme, in the Alpine foothills of the Entlebuch, and one of two villages in a large municipality that also takes in Sörenberg higher up. The area was only settled year-round from the 17th century, and the whole municipality has been part of the UNESCO Entlebuch Biosphere since 2001. Its highest ground reaches the Brienzer Rothorn and the Tannhorn. The homes are spread around the village and its slopes. This is hiking, bike-touring and llama-trekking country rather than a place for nightlife. In winter the skiing is at Sörenberg, in the same municipality.
The other village of the municipality, at about 1,159 m, with a winter ski area and a year-round cable car to the Brienzer Rothorn.
One of the municipality's two highest summits, reached from Sörenberg by a cable car that runs all year round.
The pass east of Sörenberg that crosses into the canton of Obwalden and on to Giswil.
Fly to Zurich and travel via Lucerne, which is around 45 minutes from Flühli by car. By public transport, take the train from Lucerne to Wolhusen and Schüpfheim, then postbus 241 up the valley, a journey of almost two hours. A car makes the biosphere much easier to explore.
Choose Flühli for a quieter, lower village base at about 884 m. Sörenberg, at around 1,159 m in the same municipality, sits closer to the ski area and the Brienzer Rothorn cable car.
A UNESCO biosphere reserve covering the Entlebuch region, which Flühli joined in 2001. Around the village it means hiking, mountain-bike routes, cave tours and llama trekking rather than big attractions.
By train and postbus. From Lucerne take trains via Wolhusen to Schüpfheim, then postbus 241 to Flühli; allow close to two hours for the whole trip.
Better for small parties. Homes have around two bedrooms and sleep about four, the largest seven. Check each listing for a garden or air conditioning.
