Albufeira suits families and groups who want a big resort with beaches, restaurants and nightlife, and a private pool at the villa. The trade-off is noise: discos on the Strip stay open until 6am in summer, so choose your area with care.
Albufeira is a town of about 44,000 people with two tourist areas. The Old Town sits above the Fishermen's Beach, where boats are still pulled up each morning. The Strip, around Areias de São João and Montechoro, centres on Avenida Francisco Sá Carneiro, lined with bars, restaurants and open-air discothèques. Our homes lie mostly in residential streets north-east of Oura, behind the Strip, spread over several kilometres, with a private pool at nearly every one and gardens common. Nightclubs and bars run in both the Old Town and the Strip, and in summer the discos stay open until 6am. Families also come for Zoomarine at Guia, an oceanographic park with dolphins, seals and sharks. Trains reach Faro and Lagos in about an hour each.
Part of an almost 6 km stretch of sand in Albufeira, below cliffs in tones from red to white that run toward Vilamoura.
Resort in Loulé with Portugal's largest marina, 845 berths, plus five golf courses, nightclubs and a casino.
Inland town about 15 km from the coast, with a hilltop castle of red sandstone and a cathedral built in 1189.
Oceanographic park at Guia with dolphins, seals, sharks and turtles, open in winter with shorter hours.
Faro airport is about 37 km away, around 40 minutes by road, though summer traffic can slow it. Trains run from Albufeira to Faro and Lagos in about an hour each, and local buses cross town. Taxis wait in the centre, and unsigned roundabouts can make driving confusing.
Summer is peak season, when the Strip's discos stay open until 6am and traffic around the town slows the airport run. From November to March Zoomarine keeps shorter hours, 10am to 5pm, and closes on Mondays. Fishermen still pull their boats up on the Fishermen's Beach each morning, whatever the month.
Yes, if you pick the right base. Zoomarine at Guia has dolphins, seals and sharks, and Falésia is part of an almost 6 km run of sand. The Strip's open-air discos run late, so families do better away from Avenida Francisco Sá Carneiro.
Not always. Local buses run through town, taxis wait in the centre, and trains reach Faro and Lagos in about an hour. Drivers find the roundabouts poorly signed, but a car helps from homes outside the centre.
Faro, about 37 km from Albufeira and around 40 minutes by road, though summer traffic can slow the trip. Faro is also the nearest airport for Vilamoura, so the two resorts share it.
The Strip is the newer tourist area around Areias de São João and Montechoro. Its main street, Avenida Francisco Sá Carneiro, is lined with bars, restaurants and open-air discothèques, and in summer the discos stay open until 6am.
Albufeira has the Old Town, the Fishermen's Beach and the Strip's late nights. Vilamoura, in Loulé, is built around Portugal's largest marina and five golf courses, with a casino. Choose Albufeira for beaches and nightlife, Vilamoura for boats and golf.
