Linari suits families and friends who want a fortified medieval hamlet near the river Elsa, where every home has a pool and garden. It is tiny and has no shops, and none of the homes list air conditioning, which matters in a July heatwave.
Linari is a fortified medieval hamlet of Barberino Tavarnelle, set at 255 metres on tufa ground with steep drops on three sides, about 2 km from the Elsa. Its castle is first recorded in 1072 and stood on the border between Florentine and Sienese land, which is where the name probably comes from. It was a free commune from 1270, was besieged and damaged by Sienese troops in 1432, and was remodelled in neo-Gothic style in the 19th century. Two towers survive from the walls, and the Romanesque church of Santo Stefano stands outside them. Evenings are spent on your own terrace. The homes are together in one spot, sleeping four to seven, each with a pool and garden.
The comune's nearby village keeps its medieval layout, with Florentine and Sienese gates and defensive towers above the Drove valley.
A basilica out in the countryside near Barberino, often called the oldest in Chianti, across the Valcanora valley from Linari.
A fortress-like abbey founded in 1049 among olive groves, with a Last Supper by Domenico and Davide Ghirlandaio in the refectory.
Fly to Florence. The drive from Florence to Barberino Val d'Elsa takes around 35 minutes, and buses from the city run only every few hours, so for Linari itself you need a car.
Broadly, yes. Linari belongs to Barberino Tavarnelle, a comune that spans the Val d'Elsa and the Val di Pesa and lies in the Chianti Classico wine and olive oil zones.
Yes, though much altered. The castle, first mentioned in 1072, was heavily reworked in neo-Gothic style in the 19th century, and only two towers and part of a third survive from the walls.
Close to it. Its castle controlled a side branch of the Via Francigena, guarding the road towards San Gimignano and Colle di Val d'Elsa.
By car, Florence to Barberino Val d'Elsa takes around 35 minutes, and Linari lies in the countryside of the same comune, about 2 km from the Elsa.
