Bucine is a small town in the Valdambra, in the province of Arezzo, where the Chianti hills meet the upper Arno valley. It suits rural villa weeks between Florence, Siena and Arezzo. Nearly every home has a private pool, but you will drive for almost everything.
Bucine lies in the Valdambra, in the province of Arezzo rather than Florence or Siena, about 45 km southeast of Florence. The town itself is modest, and the municipality spreads over 29 hamlets. The landscape is cultivated valleys of vineyards and olive groves alternating with hills of Mediterranean oak and scrub. Our homes are spread across several kilometres of countryside. Nearly all have a private pool, and about half have a fireplace. Many are for five or more, and a good number sleep eight or more. Evenings are quiet and local, with food and farming festivals in the villages between summer and autumn. Cennina keeps the look of a medieval castle, and Petrolo has a Romanesque church with della Robbia terracottas.
About 20 km east. Around 30 minutes by car, or about 25 minutes by train from Bucine, with trains every half hour.
Village with the best preserved medieval castle in the area, ruins of its town wall and a wide view from the north side.
Medieval tower about 27 m high with views over the Valdambra and a multimedia exhibit inside.
A walk of about 7.5 km through country paths, vineyards and cypresses to the sanctuary of Santa Maria della Ginestra.
Florence airport is the closest, about an hour by car. By public transport, take the tram to Florence's main station and a train to Bucine, around an hour and 45 minutes in all. Homes are rural, so a car is needed for shops, restaurants and the surrounding villages.
Summer is when the pools earn their place. July brings the Sagra della Rana at Pietraviva and the Battitura at Perelli. The Trout Festival falls on the second weekend of May, with a polenta festival in September and the grape festival in October. Winter is quieter, and about half the homes have a fireplace. Check opening times of village restaurants and shops before an off-season visit.
Not in the classic sense. Bucine is in the Valdambra, in the province of Arezzo, where the Chianti hills meet the upper Arno valley. It is a gateway to Chianti rather than a Chianti Classico village.
About 20 km, a drive of around 30 minutes. Trains from Bucine station reach Arezzo in about 25 minutes, so a day trip without a car works.
Florence, about an hour by car. Without a car, a tram and train via Florence's main station takes close to two hours.
Yes. Vineyards and olive groves fill the valleys, there is a 110 km Arezzo wine trail by car, and Tarese del Valdarno, a large historic salami, is a Slow Food presidium.
Plenty. Via della Ginestra is a walk of about 7.5 km through vineyards and cypresses to a sanctuary beside an ancient Etruscan well. The Via dei Corbezzoli at Cennina runs to about 13 km.
