Barberino Val d'Elsa is a small village between Florence and Siena in the Chianti area, with its homes set around it. Nearly all have a private pool and a garden. The catch is that the village is small, so a car is needed for everything beyond it.
Barberino has an elliptical layout, with its main road running between two gates, Porta Senese and Porta Fiorentina. It grew on the Strada Regia Romana, the old road between Rome and Florence, and is now part of the Barberino Tavarnelle municipality, merged with Tavarnelle Val di Pesa. The sights are compact: the Palazzo del Cardinale with Barberini arms, the Palazzo Pretorio with 35 shields carved in pietra serena, and a statue of the writer Francesco da Barberino. A walk round the centre is about 1 km. Homes are close together, mostly for two to eight guests.
Partner village in the same municipality, with a Sacred Art Museum in the rectory of the Romanesque parish church of San Pietro in Bossolo.
Fortress-like abbey founded in 1049, with a Last Supper frescoed by Domenico and Davide Ghirlandaio in its refectory.
Medieval village keeping ruins of its defensive walls, with a glazed terracotta font by Giovanni della Robbia in its parish church.
Florence Airport is about 40 minutes from Barberino Val d'Elsa by car, around 37 km. A bus links the village with the airport but takes a little under an hour and a half with one change. A car is the practical choice for the villages beyond Barberino.
Two: the main road runs between Porta Senese and Porta Fiorentina. Beside Porta Fiorentina stands the old pilgrims' hospice, the Spedale dei Pellegrini, which now houses the tourist information office.
About 40 minutes by car, around 37 km. There is a bus, but it takes a little under an hour and a half with one change, so driving is far quicker.
The municipality formed when Barberino Val d'Elsa merged with Tavarnelle Val di Pesa. It lies between the Val d'Elsa and Val di Pesa in the Chianti area, in the Chianti Classico wine and olive oil zones.
Nearly all do. The homes here are mostly small, sleeping two to eight, and nearly all have both a private pool and a garden. They are grouped fairly close to the village.
