Castiadas suits beach stays on Sardinia's south-east coast, with 13 km of coastline that takes in the long sand of Costa Rei. The municipality is large and thinly settled, and the homes are spread over a wide area, so check each one's distance from the sea.
Castiadas is a municipality about 35 km east of Cagliari, in the Sarrabus-Gerrei region, bordering Villasimius, Muravera, San Vito, Sinnai and Maracalagonis. It covers over 100 square kilometres and only became an independent municipality in 1986, with villages that grew up after the Second World War and a population that is much larger in summer than in winter. The land was reclaimed in the 19th century for an agricultural penal colony, the largest in Italy when it opened in 1875; it closed in 1956 and is now a museum. The Sette Fratelli nature park, with its canyons and gorges, is also part of the area. The homes are scattered widely; some have a pool, many sleep four, and several have two bedrooms.
About ten kilometres of fine sand, ending at the Scoglio di Peppino rock, which marks the boundary with Muravera.
About two kilometres of soft white sand with clear water, backed by pine and eucalyptus that give some shade.
Bordering municipality; the sheltered cove of Cala Pira lies near it, beside the Capo Carbonara marine area.
Nature park with canyons, gorges, deer and mouflon, and the Arco dell'Angelo, a granite rock arch above the valley.
Cagliari Airport is the one to use, about 48 minutes by car over roughly 33 miles. An ARST bus (line 101) runs from Cagliari to Castiadas Centro about three times a day, but with homes spread out a hire car is the practical way to get around.
The municipality has about 1,600 year-round residents and is much busier in the warmer months, so beach services and restaurants are at their fullest then. The coast also suits spring and autumn trips; outside summer, check what is open before you travel. The Sette Fratelli park and the former penal colony museum give reasons to visit away from the beach.
Yes. The municipality has 13 km of coastline, including Cala Sinzias, with roughly two kilometres of soft white sand, the wide golden beach of San Pietro (Cala Marina) and the ten kilometres of fine sand at Costa Rei.
About 48 minutes by car over roughly 33 miles. An ARST bus (line 101) runs from Cagliari's bus station to Castiadas Centro around three times a day, though the journey takes well over two hours.
Noticeably so. The municipality has about 1,600 year-round residents, and the population grows considerably in the warmer months, so beach services and restaurants are at their fullest then.
The largest penal colony in Italy opened here in 1875, part of an effort to turn waterlogged, disease-hit land into farmland. It stayed in use until 1956 and is now a museum.
Castiadas is the larger, more spread-out municipality, with villages and the Sette Fratelli nature park. Villasimius, which borders it, is the closer base for Cala Pira and the Capo Carbonara marine area.
