Roccastrada is a medieval hill town 475 m up in the Colline Metallifere, 25 km north of Grosseto, suited to walkers and quiet Maremma stays. The homes are scattered around the hills, so every day out needs a car.
Roccastrada stands on volcanic rock at 475 m, with views over the Maremma plain and, far off, Monte Amiata. The municipality has about 8,000 people spread among villages such as Montemassi, Ribolla, Roccatederighi, Sassofortino and Torniella, which is why our homes are scattered over roughly nine kilometres around the town. Just over half have a private pool, most have a garden and nearly half have a fireplace. Inside the town, the Teatro dei Concordi and the 13th-century church of San Niccolò are the main sights, and the single gate, Porta del Madonnino, is largely obscured by heavy restoration. Evenings are quiet, so check village opening times before an off-season visit.
A village of rock-cut alleys above the Maremma plain, below a Gothic castle that belonged to the Aldobrandeschi family.
A nature reserve set up in 1996 with beech, maple, birch and yew woods and chestnut and cork trees on the slopes.
Home to the Mining Park of Roccastrada Ribolla, an entrance to the National Park of the Metalliferous Hills.
A village among trachyte cliffs, with a church of San Martino dating to the 10th century.
A coastal town with long sandy beaches and the protected Pineta di Tombolo, a pine forest stretching about 15 km along the shore.
Pisa airport is about 150 km from Grosseto by road, and Roccastrada lies 25 km north of Grosseto, with Florence about 90 km to the north. The small inland towns are linked by winding hill roads, so hire a car; buses mostly connect the villages with Grosseto.
The coast is at its busiest in summer, when Castiglione della Pescaia's population can rise tenfold, and the villages hold food festivals called sagre through the summer. The climate is Mediterranean, without great extremes, so spring and autumn suit the 120 km Roccastrada Trekking route and the oak and chestnut woods around town. Check opening times in the villages before a winter visit.
Not on foot. Roccastrada is an inland hill town, and the coast is a drive away. Castiglione della Pescaia has long sandy beaches with clear water and a protected pine forest.
Yes. A 120 km Roccastrada Trekking route runs through the area, the local paths suit walking, riding and mountain biking, and the Torrente Farma reserve has beech, maple and birch woods with chestnut on the slopes.
Pisa. The airport is about 150 km from Grosseto by road, and Roccastrada is 25 km north of Grosseto. Florence is about 90 km to the north, so it also works.
Tortelli maremmani, acquacotta, pappardelle with hare ragù and wild boar with olives. The Monteregio wine trail passes through the town, and folk festivals are held there.
Small and hilltop. It has the 13th-century church of San Niccolò, the Teatro dei Concordi and a single heavily restored gate, with views across the plain to Monte Amiata.
