About Imperia
Imperia is two towns joined in 1923: Porto Maurizio on a peninsula to the west and Oneglia on an alluvial plain to the east, split by the Impero river. Porto Maurizio is the tourist half, threaded with narrow lanes called carrugi. The city's Cathedral of San Maurizio is the largest church in Liguria. Oneglia has the working port and Piazza Dante at its centre, and it is the industrial side of town. The city also has the Museo dell'Olivo, a museum of the olive. With over 40,000 residents it keeps going all year, unlike a seasonal resort. The homes sit within a few kilometres of each other, and fewer than half have a pool. Terraced olive hills rise behind the coast, and the largely untouched hinterland suits hiking and biking.
Is Imperia right for you?

Getting to Imperia
Nice airport is the nearest practical option, about an hour and ten minutes by road, or around two hours by train via Ventimiglia. Imperia has a station on the Genoa to Ventimiglia line and two A10 junctions, so a car is useful but not essential.
When to go to Imperia
Imperia is a popular summer destination, and its tourism centres on Porto Maurizio. It also has year-round work in olive oil, pasta, flowers and the port, so it does not close down in the way pure resort towns can. Check restaurant and beach-facility hours if you travel outside summer, as opening dates vary.
