Sanremo suits couples and small groups who want a Riviera town with a casino, an old quarter and Nice airport under an hour away. Most homes are one-bedroom apartments and few have a pool, so this is a town stay, not a poolside one.
Sanremo has about 53,000 residents and calls itself the City of Flowers, so it works as a proper town all year rather than a seasonal resort. Our homes are spread over a few kilometres around it, mostly small apartments sleeping around four, with only a minority having a garden. The seafront passes the Portosole marina and the Santa Tecla fortress, now a museum, and the Art Nouveau casino has run since 1905. La Pigna, the old quarter, is a maze of alleys with an arcaded square at Piazza dei Dolori, and the Annonario market sells local produce, tuna, pesto and olive oil. Beaches are a mix of paid facilities and free stretches. A 24 km cycle path on the old railway line starts at Ospedaletti and runs east to San Lorenzo al Mare.
Known as the city of palm trees, with round-pebble beaches, where Monet painted. Around 16 minutes by car, or about 10 minutes on the train.
Western end of the 24 km railway-line cycle path, with bike hire kiosks along the route to San Lorenzo al Mare.
Walled Taggia sits a few kilometres inland with a 16-arch medieval bridge; its seaside district has a shallow sandy shore.
Village whose main church was paid for by coral-fishing companies, listed among Italy's Most Beautiful Villages, with a chamber music festival in summer.
Nice Côte d'Azur is the practical airport, about 50 minutes by road. FlixBus runs the route a few times a day and the train via Ventimiglia takes under two hours. Along the coast, trains reach Bordighera in minutes, so a car is optional for sightseeing.
Events set the calendar: the Flowers Parade in January or February, the Song Festival at the Ariston Theatre in early February, and Milan-Sanremo in March. October is the wettest month and July the driest. La Pigna draws most visitors in the warmer months, though mild winters bring people too, and Piazza di Santa Brigida becomes an open-air cinema in summer.
Partly. There are both paid beach facilities and free sandy stretches popular with surfers, while Bordighera next door has round pebbles. Check how far each villa is from the sea before booking.
Sanremo is the larger base, with a casino, the Annonario market and the La Pigna old quarter. Bordighera is known for its palms, British residents and Monet's garden painting, with pebble beaches. They are about 16 minutes apart by car.
The Song Festival takes place at the Ariston Theatre in early February, and has done since 1951, so it falls in winter rather than high season. Milan-Sanremo finishes in the town in March. Expect events, not beach crowds.
Yes. The A10 motorway runs to Ventimiglia on the border and joins the French A8, and Nice airport is about 50 minutes away by road. Trains also run along the coast through Ventimiglia towards France.
La Pigna is the old town, a maze of streets and alleyways named for its layout, dating from around the year 1000. Start at the 14th-century Porta di Santo Stefano; the Regina Elena Gardens give a view over the rooftops and sea at sunset.
