About Luino
Luino is a town of around 14,000 people on the eastern shore of Lake Maggiore, in the province of Varese and close to the Swiss border. The weekly Wednesday market is said to be one of the largest of its kind in Europe, and the right to hold it goes back to a grant from Charles V in 1541. The station is an important border stop, busy with freight heading for the Gotthard railway as well as local trains. History shows up in odd corners: Garibaldi fought here in 1848, and the town raised Italy's first monument to him in 1867. The writers Piero Chiara and Vittorio Sereni were both born in Luino. Our homes are spread in and around the town rather than in one cluster; most have a private pool, and they are generally sized for two to four.

High summer is pool weather, and most homes here have one. If you are visiting outside summer, check with the owner whether the pool is open before you book. Whatever the month, plan around Wednesday: with one of Europe's largest markets in town that day, it pays to go early. Spring and autumn suit day trips by train into Ticino.
